Hmm, after having had a lengthy chat with Nationwide last week, during which it was confirmed that my last direct debit should take my account down to a £1 balance, it seems that they've not only collected the usual £4k direct debit - which has left me £500 overdrawn, but that they have also requested a further £3.5k, which will be rejected and land me with still more bank charges.
This is all very inconvenient, particularly as they wrote to me after my conversation confirming that they'd only be taking £3.5k, rather than the usual £4k. They have also just told me that it will take up to TEN DAYS for them to return my money.
Not very impressive. I'm waiting for a supervisor to call me back. Thank goodness I got them to confirm the situation in writing last week after my conversation with them - at least I can use this to get them to cough up for any bank charges I incur. Nevertheless, I could do without the extra hassle....

Ask them about how 10 days fits into the Direct Debit guarantee scheme. Where I work, if we incorrectly DD an amount we pay it back straight away by telegraphic transfer at our cost, they should do the same!!!!RosieTiger - Highest £242,000 Feb 2004

OK just been speaking to Nationwide again and the situation is now resolved.
The call centre operative got it wrong in that they haven't requested a further £3.5k, and as soon as the original £4k comes through to them (apparently it goes via BACS rather than Faster Payments), the excess £500 will be returned. Plus they have offered a small amount of compensation, as this time, I'd said that simply saying sorry wasn't enough.
So hopefully, all will shortly be resolved. It does however, underline what I've previously said on FB's thread - the service customers used to receive as Portman customers was a lot better than that received as Nationwide ones!

Hi QB,
Congratuations on punting the mortgage to the long grass. I was so less than enamoured with HSBC's efforts when paying the mortgage off that I've moved bank and I didn't have half the hassle you've had in the last couple of days. Look forward to seeing your entry on the roll of honour...
Cheers,

Oh my word, they have treated you terribly. I never understand how they can take the money quickly but take weeks to return it! Its disgusting. And why do they need to wait for the money to come through so they can refund you? They must be able to see that they have asked for 4k?
So pleased for you that you can now go on the roll of honour.MPs left feb '08 276- Dec 13 36 :T MB Jan 10 ~ £82,377 Dec 13 ~ £29987

Thank you all for your lovely posts...
I am now officially mortgage free:j
and have just posted on the MF Roll of Honour. I've often browsed this thread for inspiration, so it felt very odd (but rather nice) to be in the position of adding to it!
In due course, I'll post a final set of figures and analyse my journey to see if it throws up any interesting stats, but for now I'm off to celebrate with a cup of tea and a plate of home-made soup (see how ingrained my MFW habits have become????)
