From Pay As You Go To Contract.
I currently use "Pay as you Go" and I top up between £10-£30 per month, I've been told that I am a mug for doing this and that I should be using a contract.
I usually send text messages whilst making a small number of landline and mobile calls, would I be better off switching to a contact phone and if so what are my choices?
Thanks in advance.

Most people send text messages but how many do you send?
These are O2's SIM only contract tariffs. This may help.

If your costs vary between £10 - £30 per month I would stick to PAYG or sim only as you are likely to spend more, unless you want a new phone.£2 Savers club £0/£150
1p a day £/0 -
I think the mug is the person who takes out a contract - a commitment most do not need, and has the potential to wreck your credit file? It's a no brainer...
As for costs, work out what Asda Mobile charges 8p min voice 4p texts - they use the Vodafone network, and I've heard no complaints.0 -
I dont think anyone is a "mug" for taking out a contract.I used to use pay as u go but found with a contract I get more for my money and the companys offer loyalty bonuses.
A good place to start is with what mobile provider the people you mostly call are on, as a lot of the companys offer free calls to others with the same provider. Eg vodaphone -free vodaphone to vodaphone calls, o2 etc which can save you a lot.
Most of my friends are on o2 so I went for them.
The o2 sim simplicity only contract is very good as you get a free bolt on -which can be free o2 to o2 calls or internet etc.
If you connect to the 1 month tarriff -leaving you free to go at 30 days notice, you get 600mins calls and 1200 texts plus a free bolt on ( one is an extra 200mins ) for £19.58.
However the 12 month simplicity is £19.58 with 800 minutes 1600 texts ,free bolt on and up tp £100 cashback from quidco.Plus a discount on O2 broadband if you ever need it.
I personally am really happy I took a contract as when my contract expired o2 offered me a lot of incentives to stay. Currentily I pay £27.50 a month got a new samsung pixon, get 1200 free minutes, free bolt on and free broaband .I have had this deal since december and yes its for 18 months but for me I am saving a lot.
And far from wrecking my credit report it actually helped as I was unable to get a contract beforehand my credit rating has gone up as I have always paid on time.0 -
I used to spend about £10 plus a week on payg, i got a contract from 3 last month that gives me 75 mins, unlimited texts, unlimited internet and free msn for £15 a month, which is more than enough for my needs and saves me £25+ a month or £450+ over the 18 month contract, does that make me a mug for taking out a contract? No.
if you spend over £10 - £15 a month on payg it makes sense to get a contract.0 -
Thanks for all the feedback I have received.
I am with o2, I can send up to 10-15 texts per day at 12p per text.
I was told that o2 offer 300 free text each month if the customer tops up a minimum of £10 per month, is this true as I have been unable to find out anything on this?0 -

Yes with O2 Text Anytime you get 300 UK text messages for topping up £10. They expire after 30 days (But you get to keep your credit). That means if you sent 15 a day - 450 a month - you'd end up paying for 150 out of your credit - but in total they would have only averaged 2.2p each. Actually you'd need the £15 top-up which would last you 5-6 weeks.

O2 actually give you £11.22 for a £10 top-up atm - 22p bonus for the VAT rate change and 10% back as additional credit after 3-4 months.0 -
I'm in a similar situation as you, but I'm with Tesco. I top up £15 every 5-6 weeks, and they give me £30 "bonus" credit so when that runs out (probably around a month) I still have another 2 weeks to use the £15 I originally topped up with. Would fully recommend them as you don't have a direct debit or anything and you can get clubcard points too

Sounds like a perfect solution, I should have went with this ages ago.0
