Another irked customer here. Sounds like Sainsburys knew their employee was over-zealous and are now refusing to state whether they will serve alcohol to parents with teenage children.

Absolutely incredulous that I was not allowed to purchase a bottle of wine at the age of 37. Do teenagers binge drink on £15 bottles of pinot noir?! I do look younger than 37 - but would be pushing it to say I look under the age of 25! I don't have ID - but showed them my NHS ID which shows that I am a Doctor (which, unless I'm a child prodigy suggests I am over the age of 18). But I still was refused the sale.
The application of this policy is completely ludicrous as clearly it is only in the interests of the supermarkets to challenge people if appropriate (not apply this in a blanket way). The person on the checkout said they were only asking me because the 'computer told them to'. It was humiliating, badly handled by both the check out person and the supervisor and has totally put me off shopping in the store.0 -
At work we are told to only accept. UK Passports, UK Driving Licenses (Full or Provisional), National Identification Cards or ID Cards with the PASS Hologram. A supervisor may accept other types if called over but that is what we are told to only accept. This is Sainsburys btw but I'm sure Tesco will have the same policy.
You can take foreign ID, but not foreign identity cards or drivers licences. Which seems silly as identity cards are provided by the government, and everyone has to have one in many EU countries. But I have to enforce it, whether I like it or not. I had to refuse a sale on one of my last shifts. There was a 24 year old girl and a German boy who was 23 who was paying and wanted to buy some Bailey's. The girl had a UK passport which was ok, but the German guy only had a German national ID card so I refused it, under instruction from my supervisor. The guy can use that ID to get on a plane anywhere in the world, but he can't buy alcohol with it. As you can imagine, they weren't happy about it, but at least they didn't get arsey about it and throw it on the floor/ at me.0 -

I was going to say the supervisor needed some training in common sense but your version seems much more subtle0

and i thought getting asked for id was bad..example, i was buying a bottle of wine as a gift, checkout woman would not allow me to buy it as in her eyes i did not look old enough, i(i had my student card, and other forms of identity but she still wouldnt accept them) my mum who i was out with eventually joined me in the que , and she was able to buy the wine, but not with my money ....anyhoo,0

I went to a Ralph's supermarket in La Jolla, California. I realise that American's are more fastidious about checking ID than their British counterparts, so I took my passport and driving license. I got refused. On the basis that they did not contain a physical description (I explained that the photograph works better than a line saying "blue eyes, brown hair", etc. No joy.0
