Hello flamingobroke and well done for having the guts to make your first contact with this site. We have all been ostriches at one time, and don't get me started on being stupid with money! Where that is concerned I have a degree in stupidity from the University of Stupidity in Stupidtown. At least now I am taking control and finding ways to sort out my debt situation, and you can too. Do as the previous posters have suggested, and this will truly be the first day of the rest of your life. Keep in touch, no matter what time of day or night it is there is always some sad individual on here in the small hours to talk to (usually me on a night shift!)

Have subscrived to your thread so will keep checking in.

In the meantime 2 others little tips you can start straight away. Start a spending diary - find yourself a little notebook/or very small diary and put it in your handbag. Then start recording every single thing you buy, whether its 50p on a drink, £20 on petrol or £60 on new shoes! This will become really useful in working out where your money is going and keeping the impulse spends in check.

2nd tip - if you don't already use internet banking then get this set up. Call your bank or pop into the branch to find out how. Once you have it you'll find its easy to use and then you'll have much better control of your finances. (usually they have to send something in the post to activate the account so the sooner you set this up the better).
Another way of using a spending diary is to allocate a weekly amount to yourself per week, from your budget after all essentials have been deducted. Using receipts, deduct as you spend through the week. Try to get to the end of the week leaving some over to carry forward to the next week. This has the effect of keeping your overdraft down and avoids overspend.

Hey Flamingo - just wanted to say welcome. The biggest step to make is admitting you have a problem and need help... sadly addiction and problems like you write about feed on the guilt and shame they themselves create to keep them perpetuating. It's a viscious circle - what you do makes you feel bad and yet to combat those feelings you turn to the very thing that made you feel bad in the first place!

But you are on the road to breaking that circle now. You have spoken about your problems and realised that you are certainly not alone and in fact have friends on this board already.

I am battling debt myself caused by my dependence on emotional crutches that were actually nothing but damaging. But there's a light at the end of the tunnel - you just need to keep walking towards it.

Thing won't always be easy from here on in and unfortunately that 'self destruct' button might always be around. But step by step you'll get out of this one day at a time. And keep sharing what's happening - an addict in isolation is in bad company. So keep us informed and we'll all help you on your way!

Well done for sharing and good luck from here on in.

    B.

Another massive WELCOME from me!! :A

Have you discussed how you are feeling with your family doctor? Feelings of not being able to cope, hopelessness, head in the sand, problems with sleeping, self medicating with alcohol or spending, lack of motivation ... you are describing classic signs of suffering with depression. Many many of us on here have been in your shoes and we will support you as much as you can, but ask for professional help also.

Keep posting, we look forward to getting to know you!
