I doubt you could ever guarantee they have all gone, if it really bothers you, just make bramble jelly so that way there wouldnt be any 'solids' in it ;)

There has been a great abundance down at our allotment plots, most of which I have frozen or cooked and pulped to make jelly or seedless jam with apples to ensure none of the maggots are there (or seen).

I open freeze mine, and when I go to put them in a bag I often find that the maggots have come out of the berries so I can dispose of them then.

After picking nearly 3kg of blackberries on Monday and soaking them in salt water overnight, I spent yesterday making apple and blackberry jelly and spiced apple and blackberry jam. The jam is quite soft set, but I've decided to leave it as it is. So I have got 7 jars of jelly and 14 jars and a plastic tub of jam ( I ran out of jars) for about £2.50 which was the cost of the sugar.
I have to admit to being preserved out at the moment, but have a carrier bag of apples to turn into chutney at some point. Just as soon as I can get some more jars.

just dont pick them from the side of the road cos then theyre full of lead off the car fumes ;D

Is this right? We all use unleaded fuel now, so don't see how they can be full of lead. Covered in dust from the road, yes.

This is probably a very silly question - but - I have an unused roll of 'Stockinette Polishing and Wiping Cloth' - can this be used for straining blackberries for making b. jelly? Perhaps boiled first?
  • I took my children blackberry picking for the first time today and we managed to pick 5lbs of them (Not sure what that is in new money:o) I didn't expect to get that many so we will make a crumble and a pie.
The kids loved it and I have finally found something good about having to use a walking stick;)

I'd use it doubled as the holes can get quite big when it's stretched. Just scald it with boiling water first.

Or she could put it in a scalded collinder or seive and let it drain out slowly without the material being streched so to speak.

Need to get on with the massive bag of berries Oh and the kids got me a couple of days ago. Going to get them out of the fridge and get going this afternoon.
Going to do seedless jam/jelly and some blackberry "beena", plus a pie and a crumble i think.
