It is ok to install maybe 3-5 at a time, but i wouldnt recommend installing 20plus at a time. if you did and you had a problem you wouldnt know which one cause it. and it only takes 1 to screw up a system, which is why i personally disabled windows update permanently on my system.
ok fact. one of my brothers friends did windows update, and screwed up their sound, no matter how many times they reinstalled the sound drivers from their motherboard cd it wouldnt work, why you ask, because they did a all windows update, and microsoft installed their own improved sound card drivers, the orginials where realtek HD drivers and worked. I know this cause my brother brought me the computer to fix, I removed the windows HD sounddrivers and spent 3hrs trying to work out why the orginial drivers wouldnt work when they installed correctly, in the end i had to format and reinstall the os, i installed the sound drivers realtek HD from the motherboard and low and behold the sound was back.
Fact I did a windows update once, my system was working perfectly before the update, and wasnt after the update. i ended up have to restore my system to an image i created before going to the windows update. Never did find out what the update was that caused it. I do remember loosing sound which was working perfectly, after update nothing. remember spending 3-4hrs trying to work it out, due to all the 113 updates approx this was before the service pack 2 was released, before giving up and do the image recovery, Thank god for acronis.
How many other people's computers have i repaired where they went to windows update and downloaded ALL the updates. Quite a few. as the old saying goes, IF IT AIN'T BROKE DONT TRY TO FIX IT, cause the fix, updated driver, maybe the cause of the break.
Using Windows Update will not get rid of the popups, and if you have an antivirus installed already and its working, why uninstall it, and replace with avira. if they have kaspersky installed that would be alot better than avira, ok avira is free, but then some people can get kaspersky free with their bank, now if they have norton, mcafee ok i would agree with you to remove it. But the OP didnt state which one they got, if they even had one.
Facebook does currently or did have a problem with viruses/trojans,
is this what happened to you, "Stupidly clicked on a link saying something along the lines of "Is it alright if i put this picture of you on my facebook/myspace" It then gave a link to a facebook site and I didnt catch on when it asked to run a program."
if you dont want to install an antivirus scanner > http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner <online scanner
after the OP posts their Hijackthis log and malwarebytes, you MAY need to download and use COMBOFIX.0 -
Okay Andy, let's try and count. You first. One, two, three... Four! That's right. I suggested 4 things to install. Each doing seperate jobs, each the best in their respective field. It is ok to install maybe 3-5 at a time, but i wouldnt recommend installing 20plus at a time
What are you on about?! When the anti-virus finds a virus you know it was a VIRUS. When the anti-malware finds malware, you know it was MALWARE. It's not hard.you had a problem you wouldnt know which one cause it.
I don't but go on with your pointless story.why you ask
So just because your brothers friend didn't bother to check which updates were ticked for install you now don't recommend obtaining important security updates from Microsoft? You can't be THAT dumb surely?because they did a all windows update
Let me tell that to the patching team at work who patch an enterprise environment of 500 servers. Hey guys. We don't need to patch any more. Some guy on a forum said it'll break all the servers. GET REAL!IF IT AIN'T BROKE DONT TRY TO FIX IT, cause the fix, updated driver, maybe the cause of the break.0 -
I'm amazed at the over reaction of most posters in this thread.
A few popups served from a specific site or two is hardly a certain indication that there is a virus or the need to invest hours installing software to try and seek it out.
The online scan suggestion looks good to me as does the suggestion that using FireFox with adblock plus may sort it but I know of sites which are capable of circumventing even that.
I'd also agree that the install of the four different checkers is fine if there is hard evidence of infection.0 -

My suggestion was simply a thorough way to rule out viruses, malware and spyware. It's up to the OP if they want to install the software I've suggested and take some time to do the suggested scans. Without seeing the popups or knowing how they've used their PC no one can say what is required and as you say Firefox with the Adblock Plus add on may be all that's needed.0 -
God david arent you FULL of yourself, this is a pc not a freaking server. YES select all the updates can cause a problem, some people are novies and dont relalise they have to check each one, they just think click all and no problems.
Which one caused the problem refering to 1-5 of the windows updates if your system started behaving weirdly, like 1 minute you have sound, you select 5 updates to install, rebooted and lost your sound, why the hell would an antivirus pick up that, unless the drivers from microsoft where infected.
Your pointless story, you asked me for Fact, not a story, FACT, they did install drivers from microsoft update and they did loose sound, yet they had sound working perfectly before doing the update, and they didnt install anything else. so what caused it then the little gremlin hiding in the background waiting to play when they left the room.
Note, brother friend, try 6 people all different types of users, and oh by the way, then there where or course the 3000 people who also had a problem with 1 of the updates, which was written on microsoft's own forum and microsoft ended up fixing, yeah there was a bug in the update.
Where in any of your posts did you say 4Install any available Windows updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
Getting back to the OP, just install malwarebytes, update and run a scan, post the log here, then get hijackthis and run scan + log file. Then wait for alienrik / browntoa to tell you what to remove.
CCleaner would only remove rubbish from the recycle bin, and temporary internet folders, wont remove virus's or trojan from the system.
As for the windows updates, upto you, all you really need is the service pack 3 update if your on sp2, sp1b or sp1a. Sp<service pack.0 -

You should really read up on proper grammar and spelling. This is barely readable.0 -
hahahaha...
Seriously, you can make the pop-up blocker block any pop-ups. Just go to settings and set the filter to high.0 -
ok 1 spelling error novices*, missed the S on brother's friend, but its still readable,
select should have been selecting, relalise, typo. it happens. realise
Microsoft admitted there was a fault with one of there updates on their forum which caused problems for certain people, something to do with realtek HD drivers and their own sound HD driver.
Well david not everyone goes to university, I never even went to college after leaving school. But I have got an I.Q of 141,0 -
Well, what a hornets nest I have opened!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Some posters need to chill.
As yet I haven't done anything about these ads as I am still pondering over the varied replies.
Thanks for the time being.

Have discovered these ads (and some are porno) only appear when I am logged in to Facebook. If I were to change my email addy for Facebook, that would solve the ads wouldn't it or do you think it is a bit more complicated than that?
Thanks
