Mot 12 months warrenty????

At the moment on another forum we are trying to decide wether a car would be road worthy 11 months after passing its MOT, if you take it for a new MOT and it failed, even though it had a months MOT left, is there some kind of garantee that says it will be roadworthy for the full 12 months. Are there any eagle beagles out there to help

An MOT tells you that the car satisfied the requirements of the test at the time it was tested. It certainly isn't a warranty that the car will be roadworthy for 12 months and anyone who says otherwise is an idiot.

An MOT states that the car is roadworthy at the time of testing and is not a warranty.

    My current MOT certificate states:

"This certificate relates only to the condition of the vehicle at the time of testing. It should not be regarded as evidence of the condition of the vehicle at any other time. When you purchase a vehicle you should not regard this Test Certificate as a warranty. This certificate does not remove the responsibility from the registered owner to regularly service and maintain the vehicle in accordance with the manufacturers instructions."

No, as has been said the MOT proves nothing more than the car being OK at the time of the test.

Your car could become a potential MOT failure before you even drive it out of the test centre. Not likely but possible, say you reversed into something and smashed your rear lights - MOT failure. You use up the last of your windscreen washer fluid - MOT failure.

how would it be guaranteed when theres so meny things that could go wrong at any time. Your tyres pass an MOT yet you drive 10000 miles and they are bald, does that mean you would go back to MOT centre and complain? No! Its up to the owner and driver to keep an eye on things in a regular basis to make sure the car is roadworthy, not just for their own safety but for other road users too. Its commen knowledge to check your screenwash, brake lights, tyres, brakes etc.

Everyones pretty much said it like it is.

MOT only relates to safety too, its basically the minimum safety levels of what are essentially the safety features of the car. Things like the condition of the engine arent tested as such.

So a rubbish car with lots of problems can pass an MOT easy peasy.

I agree. When buying a new car I often ask if I can pay for it to have an MOT. If it passes, I'll buy it, if not (or the seller refuses) I'll run a mile!

I dont understand what you mean?

Surely logic and common sense tells you an MOT is a government imposed safety test thats required by law in order to ensure the car meets a set of basic standards.

Its not a warranty on the vehicle.... just a way of vetting cars to ensure they are roadworthy.

Cars are made up of consumables. How could deem the MOT a warrant when the brakes, tires, gearbox etc are prone to wear and tear?!?!

do you have an ACTUAL situation you wish to discuss, or is it just a theoretical debate? looks like it from the other thread, in which case, discussion time, not this board?
