I think there was just confusion over the manner of the test.

I can see why someone would be a bit confused as to how theoretically a car could fail its MOT a week after it passed but as posters pointed out the MOT is a test of the cars safety, not necessarily its condition.

Its just a benchmark of safety all cars must achieve on a yearly basis.

The issue is with your lack of comprehension, everyone else understands it perfectly well.

Merely given as an example I had my MOT done last month. The car passed without incident but I was warned on a seperate sheet that I had an unusual pattern of wear on my tyres and whilst I was road legal at the point of the MOT I was unlikely to remain that way for another year and I was strongly advised to get my tyres changed and the tracking sorted out within 3 months. So yes as at July 2009 my car was road legal but possibly by December 2009 it would not be.

You could pick your car up at the MOT centre, think "Oooo, It's a bit dark", put your headlights on and one pops! That would fail an MOT retest on the same day!
