The same test can be configured in Windows. Read the section entitled, "Manual steps to run Chkdsk from My Computer or Windows Explorer" here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265

Ensure Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors is ticked when you get to the box following the steps in the above link.

You havent posted any of the log files of malwarebytes, so we cant see what trojans you had.
if it said VUNDO, then you need to download combofix, if it wasnt then dont.
i would suggest you download hijackthis 2.0.2 and run a scan + log file, it will open notepad when it done, just select all and copy and paste here.
How to get better performace from windows xp,
    1. turn off services you dont need, <will free up memory aswell.
    2. empty your recycle bin, delete other trash
    3. check disc and defrag < dont use the built in defrag takes to long, defraggler would be quicker. freeware and small
    4. buy more memory, whilst windows xp will run on 256mb, it would be far happier running on 512, but 1gb would be better. my system was running on 256mb before i added a 1gb stick making 1.25gb, depends on what your motherboard supports.

Unless you know exactly what the service does and what other services may depend on it then this is a very risky and foolhardy thing to attempt.

Read the thread. This has already been done.

knew i forgot to post something.

http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm <read carefully. This will tell you what services to disable,
one service you can disable is the help and support, just turn it from AUTOMATIC to MANUAL, it will load when you press F1 as it would do if it where on automatic, but the system wont load it into memory when xp loads. and its a resource hog.

I would highly recemmend not doing this.

    Quote from Blackviper's site:
I cannot possibly test all configurations extensively (meaning, each persons specific computer needs), but what I can offer is what "works for me" and the obstacles I have came across so you do not have to discover them on your own. If information on this page needs a revision or expanded, please check out the forums.

Spot on. At least someoe around here knows what they're talking about.

Let me reiterate - Unless you know exactly what the service does and what other services may depend on it then this is a very risky and foolhardy thing to attempt.

how hard is it to turn from automatic to manual not to disable. automatic = windows will load this automatically, even if not needed,
manual = windows will only load this when required, thus saving load times, memory.
disabled = this will never be loaded.

Blackvipers website also says create a restore point before changing the services as a caution.
Changing from automatic to manual will not BLOW UP the computer, will not damage the computer, will not damage the hardware or software installed.
If you read blackvipers site and read carefully what each service does you should be able to decided whether you need that service. example, if your on a wireless network, then you wouldnt turn this to manual or disabled. you would leave it turned to automatic, however if your not on a wireless system at all and have the modem connected directly into the pc ethernet / usb, then why have it turned on, change from automatic to manual,

There are many optimizers out there to do the same things, xp-antispy < will do the same thing.

Best bet though is to buy a 1gb memory upgrade and forget it. depending on the module required, can be anything from £20 - £40 for 1gb
