    6, Run an anti-malware scan: http://www.malwarebytes.org/

This is rather a timely thread as just pulled out an old laptop. Have spent since 8.30pm working on it. It is now nearly 3am

    Nearly there I think :rotfl:

Any how I twice intstalled malware and twice when I tried to run it I get an error.:o

I am tired now so going to go to bed in a min. just re-booting the laptop one more time to see how long it takes.

Think it might need so more ram as it only has 128mb in it.

What was the error? I'm afraid to say my list of things to try is very time consuming. It does pretty much rule out everything other than more RAM or wipe the machine then reinstall XP.

It is time consuming as the spyware took 2 hours to do a full scan  that is how slow that machine is.

The error code is 703. Tells me to report it them.

It's not just the slowness of your computer which is causing it to take a while; it may partially be down to how many files you have. If you've 200,000 files say, it'll take a lot longer than 30,000 files.

Please download and install this: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=25437D98-51D0-41C1-BB14-64662F5F62FE&displaylang=en

Reboot then try and re-install malwarebytes. I'd recommended you persevere to the last step if possible...

I had no idea it took so long for these scans to do, and had to go to work yesterday too.
But I have now scanned with all suggestions and malawarebytes found a Trojan and 2 objects, other than that, nothing else found.

But I still have the same problem.
Last week took a couple of mins to boot up now it takes 3/4 hour to load.
But not if I get it to scan it self for file system errors at the start of each boot up.
So I guess I could just set it to do that every evening when I turn it off so its scans next day, and then runs OK, but that doesn't seem like the best idea as I must have something hiding on it somewhere.

    Any more ideas anyone?

So you've carried out the anti-virus / spyware etc scans but have you completed steps 7-10?

can it self for file system errors at the start of each boot up.

    - Click Start, and then Run.
    - In Open, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
    - At the command prompt, type chkdsk volume:/r, and then press ENTER.
    e.g.
    C:\>chkdsk c:/r
    - If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message:
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)
    - Type Y, and then press ENTER to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.
    - Once complete carry this step out again for any other drives you have.

If the problem persists after this then can you confirm the make of your hard disk drive? An easy way to find this is to go to My Computer, right click C: select Properties, select Hardware tab, what are the Names under All disk drives?
  • I used to have an old laptop with 256 ram, it didn't run xp too well after a few years..

Have you tried defragging? That really helps..

deffraggler is a small programme that will do it for you, do it regularly. The whole computer scan will take a few hours though

scan the registry, could be something missing, or accidentally deleted

Defragging is covered in step 8. Scanning the registry is not required and certainly not recemmended unless you know what you're doing.
