boot up problem.....so slow

been happening for a few days now, have tried all the recommended virus scans, and now I'm out of ideas.

Its an old computer anyway but it takes 25 mins from turning on to load up and another 5 mins to get a web page to open, then a minute at least for each page to open after that. There is also several seconds delay for using the return key when typing.

If I right click on my hard drive icon, ask it to scan for problems on start up, then after reboot and scan it loads normally and works fine but only for that session.

Your ideas please, its driving me mad.

Thanks
Annie

gave up waiting for the spell checker, after 3 mins still not opened, so sorry if any spelling mistakes.

Also post up how much memory you have on your computer, available by right clicking on my computer and going into system information.

Then, what operating system do you have?

Yeah you aren't to far away from maxing out your memory! Have you installed any programs in the past few days or updated anything? Even your antivirus program?

I've also got an XP computer with 256 MB RAM lying about and after installing Service Pack 2, it got really slow, and then Service Pack 3 slowed it down a little bit more. Never mind all the other updates!

There may be other problems as well, but to keep a 10 year old PC running XP going for a few years yet you need to upgrade your RAM to at least 512MB.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
