  • Not a flyer so I don't know where you can fly to from Edinburgh, but any of the big German cities will have fabulous Christmas markets and truly festive atmosphere. How about Berlin - loads to see and do there.

Usefully, Edinburgh Airport's website lists destinations from the airport.
Most Airports' websites do this, which is great for travel planning.

  • Barcelona, Florence, Rome, or Lisbon. All beautiful cities & reasonably cheap from UK. Would expect the current Mrs Bean would be pleased with any of them, if not you should be looking for the future Mrs Bean!
  • Krakow - flying from Edinburgh with EasyJet. It is magical around Christmas time - the Xmas markets in the Old Town Square are a delight. Surrounded by some wonderful architecture too. Hotels to suit all budgets. Have a look on www.cracowlife.com for lots of ideas on hotels, restaurants etc. There is also a wealth of information on TripAdvisor.

I'm a total Prague-ophile so I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it as a suitable destination. Flights dep 20 Dec and ret 23 Dec are about £90 with Jet2. I can get you a deal on the 5* Prague Marriott for about £70 per night so if you're interested PM me for details.

I have just been out with a friend who has just come back from Venice (together with Verona & Lake Garda) and she was totally raving about it. It is a place I've been wanting to go to for some time but not got around to it. I've seen a 5* hotel - could be the Hilton - come up at a reasonable price via Priceline. Check out Betterbidding for the prices paid. Sorry I've not checked if you can fly direct from Edinburgh.

I was in Paris earlier on this year and loved that and also loved Prague when we went a couple of years ago. (Extra note - I found Paris accommodation very expensive for very small rooms.)

I agree with Glen. Prague is a fantastic city. The local tram system is great for getting about if you don't want to walk everywhere.

    Thanks again for the responses.

I am trying to arrange the trip as a surprise. I asked her in a roundabout way where she would like to go without giving anything away and she said Prague. Having said that I didn't think had considered many of the excellent other suggestions, so i think that Prague it is.

I've also been fortunate enough to visit Prague just before Christmas. Really impressed me for being so "intact" compared to many cities these days. Very beautiful to walk around, drink mulled wine and get in the Christmas spirit.

Here's a starting point for your hotel (should bring up 4 star Prague hotels)
