The shop called "savers" what a joke!

My daughter went into the shop called Savers in Colchester and brought an item worth £1... she had to use a £20 note as she didnt have anything smaller, however she was only given £9 change and didnt realise until she checked whilst looking at her receipt outside the shop, thinking somthings not quite right here.... but as she was with a friend who said "I think you did only give them £10." which is why she didnt go back in the shop and complain and wasn't 100% sure until she got home and counted how much she had spent and how much change she had, they didnt both add up to the amount she had taken with her. Yup it was £10 under, so she decided to ring the shop not only was the manager rude but he wouldnt give her any contact details for his area manager claiming he was on holiday. He insisted he had counted the till up and it was only £1.19 over she then asked for customer relations number and he told her "they wont do anything about it".
The problem is even if they insist she gave them £10 her recipt says she only gave them £1 and no change back, so thats not right for a start she told him that and he replied "the lady on the till is new and only just been trained up" in which case the lady should of wrote on her receipt that it was wrong so she wouldnt later look at it and get confussed.
It seems strange that at the time of paying the lady behind the till was telling my daughter about a new handbag shop that had just opened round the corner and that if you spend £20 you get £10 off another bag now this might just be a coinsidence or done dilberatly to put my daughter off, my daughter told the manager that if a mistake has been made on the receipt it should then be corrected with a pen (she should know as she works on a checkout herself) Surely this lady should of been supervised if she cant count to 20.... I dont know she just wants her £10 back!!! I know it's only £10 but do this to a few people and someone's on to a nice little earner.....!!!!!

I've been short changed in Asda at the Lottery kiosk. Gave her £10 for a £2 ticket and only got £3 back. Didn't realise until I got home and checked my purse. I have my suspicions that it might have been deliberate, as I caught the assistant staring at me later when we were waiting at the Customer Services desk for something totally unconnected, and she looked a bit uneasy. I think because she is handing over not only the change but the lottery ticket and lottery plastic card thing (with the barcode on, which they scan when you use the same numbers all the time), you psychologically think you have been given the correct change.

Sorry, doesn't help with your problem but I wanted to take the opportunity to warn people to be very careful when buying lottery tickets as it is so easy to get distracted by all the bits you are given back, and not realise you haven't had a note in your change.

Needless to say the store never rang back to say their till was over, when I contacted them. Well it wouldn't be would it, if the fiver was in the girl's pocket. I'm 100% sure on this occasion, as I'd drawn 2x£10 notes from the cash machine earlier, and my OH paid for the other shopping we did, so I should have had £18 left not £13.

It's a lesson learned, and a reminder to check your change before leaving the store, or even the checkout area.
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

It does sound a little bit dodgy that the checkout person but it through as the exact £1 cost, on tills there is normally one button to press for £5, £10, £20 etc, surely it's not too difficult to do that? Sounds like a bit of a con to me, especially if she was going on about ten and twenty pound notes at the time of the transaction. I've seen it loads of times (mostly in bars) where you get ripped off like that, but most people won't bother checking their change/receipt and just put it straight in their purse or pocket without thinking. What time did she ring the store? Why would the manager have counted the till in the middle of the day? To be honest though most stores say that if you leave and then realise there's been a mistake with change they can't do anything about it.

Yep Bogof_babe, similar thing happened to us in a bar. Had already asked the girl working behind the bar how much for a shot of jager, she said £1.50. Went back to the bar later and was served by a lad. We were totally skint that night and had a fiver left between me and the OH and as a result we were pretty much sober. I bought a shot, gave him the fiver and he went to the till, then turned to serve someone else. When I tried to tell him we gave him a fiver he basically tried telling us we were too drunk and we'd given him the exact money. It was only after we kicked up a bit of a fuss that he begrudgingly brought me my change of £3, so he still ripped me off for 50p, the cheeky b*stard! If he did that with every customer, think how much money you could pocket in a night, with most people being too drunk to notice and check their change.

To be fair to Savers if a customer phones up and says 'I bought something for a quid five hours ago and got short changed by a tenner but I have nothing to prove this' they aren't going to pay back anything. If they did and word got out then every Tom, !!!!!! and Harry would be phoning asking for money.

The moral of the story is to carefully check your change before leaving the till, let alone the store.

Doesn't excuse the manager for being rude though.

Reminds me of a time a barmaid tried short changing me £10 from a £20 note, on 3 separate occasions in the same night, the 1st time I thought, oh well mistakes happen, the second time I thought "watch her", the third and final time I said "manager please NOW!"

They should do the same thing as supermarkets though, take a note of your name and phone number, then when they count the tills at the end of the night/week, if they're up a tenner then ring you and you can come and collect it. Unfortunately it's obvious that they're not going to do that, it seems like the manager was either in on the scam or just couldn't be bothered checking for you. Of course it could have just been an honest mistake, but there was no need for him to be rude to you, try writing to their head office or sending an email or something, he obviously didn't want you to get in touch with them, maybe the same thing has happened to other people?

Back when I was 21 (A long time ago!), I had this but the other way around. Every time I bought a pint with a tenner, he gave me change for a £20. I also won on 2 x fruit machines after only putting a quid in! I went out with £40, came back in with £45 and was very, very merry!! :D

lol the till was ONLY £1.19 over ?!?!?

imo thats a clue somthing is not right, wouldnt suprise me if the person on the till is nicking money, i caught a staff member pocketing money after shortchanging people in poundstretchers, i never worked there again and not by choice, it was because i was too much trouble, security is meant to watch the customers not the staff, but its pretty obvious when people are stealing in front of you.

thats the same "con" that was in the movie "The Grifters" with John Cusack, he would have a $20 out and ask for a miller light beer, when the bar man went to get it (and his change) he would swap it fast for $10 and get $18 change back, so he gets free beer and $8 each time for the privilidge.
