Most councils will wait until you have proof you are homeless because a lot of people get their parents to write letters like that just to get a place of their own. They don't take a letter of proof anymore
  • How do you only get £289 a month benefit when you're on DLA? I am on DLA at the lowest rate and I get £226 a month for that alone. Even if you're under 25 and single, you must get at least £40 a week Income Support. And if you're currently living with your parents how come you're getting Income support? (You haven't mentioned how old you are, if I'm not mistaken your age is a significant factor when claiming HB- I moved out at 16 and couldnt claim anything until I was 18 unless my Mum produced a letter saying she refused to have me living at her house)

Connexions might be a better avenue than CAB if you have one in your area and youre young.

    hi

yes sorry i get £15 a week dla and all together i get around £300 a month (so its just under £200 after i pay my car incurance and per inscurance for my dog!!) i am 20 and they gave me income support as my parents wouldnt buy me anything to eat cloths or anything.

i went to my local youth housing project today and they took my details but i have to go with my parents 2morro and when i asked my mum she said that it looks bad on the family if she says she is kicking me out but i said its the truth so you have to otherwise i will be homeless!!!
I just hop she says that tommrow when we see the council officer person and doesnt act like i made it all up!!.

THANKYOU EVERYONE YOU HAVE ALL BEEN A GREAT HELP BLESS YOU ALL FOR TAKING THE TIME TO WRITE TO ME.

  • Yes, I have a pacemaker and get low rate mobility, middle rate care as I need a helper to come in a couple of hours a day when my partner is away incase I blackout when cooking. I think what I receive is the minimum, you can't get lower than low rate mobility, and I think (but may be wrong) that the care element only coming in Middle and High rate.

Also, when you receive DLA it is a passport for a higher rate increment on your income support. I received Income Support for a couple of months when I first had my baby and was a lone parent, and instead of getting the standard £80-90 a week Income Support I got about £140 for having a disability also, on top of this I got my DLA at 226 a month and my Housing benefit.Council Tax benefit. (In fact come to think of it, I dont know why I got a job! I had it pretty easy!)

No idea where youve got £15 from, and why the hell are you paying for pet insurance?? It is statistically proven to be the biggest waste of money EVER because the premium doesnt justify the pay out in the evnt of vet treatment. Besides, if your pet was sick there are loads of 'charity pet hospitals' thatd treat it for free!

And without being rude, I think a car should be the least of your priorities when youve no home and no money and unless you live 20 miles from civilisation and no bus route, I think that is terrible financial management. And, again, without sounding rude, why dont you have a job? Does your disability hinder you in getting one? (You haven't mentioned what you get DLA for) If so, you can get a flat paid by HB and a higher amount of Income Support.

Sorry this has happened to you. I just wanted to say good luck and that I second all the advice already given.

The other thing I recommend is keep visiting the council offices every day to see about housing.

You might have to live in temporary accomodation for a while but eventually you should get your own flat.

Also make sure you register with all the Housing Associations in your area.

I work for Housing and it is rare that single men are given priority, even if they are on DLA. Our Homeless Team would give him a list of local hostels or suggests he applies for low demand flats / bedsits on our inernet-based lettings system. I let a lot of my "hard to lets" from people who are refused priority - it is a paradox that they can get rehoused quicker that someone with priority!!

Not trying to put a damper on OP, just being realistic.

The priority need would come from the OP's health problems. If he's on DLA and has health problems it's the councils duty to investigate whether there is a priority need for housing. The fact that he's a single male shouldnt come into it - a single female with health problems would be treated the same. The reason more women are rehoused is that they often have children or have left a violent relationship. Women are more likely to be priority need but that doesnt mean men aren't.

'HIS" names is nicola if that makes any difference...
  • When you finally recieve the HB you can register with the PDSA. Then you can take your dog to a PDSA registered vet. You then only pay what you can afford to give. Give up the dog insurance or find a cheaper policy.
