Very simple, whether it's a phone call or guy at the door.
    1. Not interested please go away - thank you.

Same for me. I don't understand how someone who has been cold called can complain that they were on the phone for ages because they couldn't get a word in.

It is your phone it has a button that disconnects the call USE IT.

  • Thanks for the suggestion about merging the threads - that would be brilliant if it vcan be done - yes I suppose I am on a crusade.

By the way - I dont have long conversations with these people they last about 50 seconds - long enough to realise who they are - but they call back and back on the same day.
The distinguishing factor with Energy Savers seems to be the fact that the more you say no and put the phone down the more inspired they are to call you back a few mionutes later - it encourages them.
If you arerude to them - they seem to be spiteful and call back to be rude to you - its not your average call centre experience at all.
Which is why I want to work out who they work for and complain properly if its possible to the people they represent - if its a UK commpany who benefits. ;)

So don't say no or be rude to them, as you say engaging in any form of dialogue appears to encourage further calls. Either just quietly put the phone down or politely ask them if they are able to hold and leave the phone connected and them hanging. Neither of those are entertaining for the staff whereas you being abusive probably is. Repeat until they get the message.

Alternatively don't get drawn into conversations about you. Ask politely who they represent and do they have an address you can contact them on. Whatever they say, ignore and repeat your questions about contact details. Once you have that, write and complain.

  • meggsy thanksfor that link - very useful

Firefox - thanks for your advice. These people do not tell you anything abou themselves so getting their contact details is impossible. As they call from abroad they are also untraceable - usng probably an internet phone linnk
The worst thing you can do is to be rude or play tricks on them as they return the favour five times over - we are just hoping they go away.

Do what I do, get them to repeat everything they say, keep complaining about a noisy line, next one you need a cordless phone for, go to the toilet and let them hear you peeing, say hang on while I pull my zip up as I need 2 hands, wander to the door and ring the door bell and when the caller says are you taking the !!!! say yes . They usually hang up then.

I've tried 3 different tactics - and all have worked

    1) ask them who they want to speak to, and then say "I will get them for you". Put the phone down and leave them hanging on til they hang up. Good cos it costs them more for the call

    2) make sure they can just hear you say to someone in the same room as you "Here is another one, trace this call Charlie"

    3) chuckle when they say who they are and reply "I saw your firm on Watchdog last week"

I have had them instantly hang up in the examples of 2) and 3) above. Try and have fun with them - take the pee a bit. Whatever you do, don't give ANY details!

I love this advice especially the trace the call one.

I had a call today from energy savers I think they have been calling for a while but I am always out. Will wait and see if they call again, getting ready to ask Charlie to trace the call...
I always wanted to be a procrastinator, never got round to it...

Priceless - I'm gonna give this a go. We need one for the ladies though. That could be even funnier thinking about it. A female voice answers the phone, followed by the sound of her peeing, then announcing "Hang on, while I pull my zip up". Now that really is taking the pi**. Any variations?
