True true - havent really thought about it other than the worry of the last 15 years without cover and having 3 lads to bring up and all the things that could have happened - i suppose i have been extremely lucky but then what is frustrating is the one time that you NEED to claim and you 'think' that you are covered and you're not is really really frustrating - maybe its time for new carpet and not pay the insurance company any more money!

OMG. I'm going to ignore this thread now because its unbelievable that someone can have your attitude towards things !

I've just realised that I've been paying an extra £60 a year for accidental damage cover, but I've never had a claim over the past 30 years.

What a waste of money. Can I get a refund?

Out of interest can anyone state the IC's definition of an accident?,

We could look at what accidental damage then covers.

'Unexpected and unintended damage caused by sudden and external means' is what my policy says. Others may vary slightly but have the same intention. It will go on to say that damage by other insured perils (fire, theft etc) is not covered under this item.

Damage by frost, damp, corrosion, wet or dry rot, fungus, insects, vermin, woodworm, domestic pets, wear and tear and any gradually operating cause are excluded.

No doubt you will have a whole load of objections.

  • Ok so we the policy holders invest in “accidental damage cover” as part of our insurance.

It is sold to us on the understanding that “if” we should “accidentally” damage our TV or Carpet or Table etc that we are covered. The type of coverage may vary be new for old or replacement etc, but either and anyway we are under the impression that because we took out “accidental damage” cover we will be ok.

So, we make a claim for whatever reason, only to be informed that “accidental damage” has a “definition” and the definition is this (as suggested by cogito)

'Unexpected and unintended damage caused by sudden and external means'

My thought is that ok, we all have an opinion as what unexpected, unintended and sudden mean, and by enlarge this actually points towards a realistic definition of an accident. i.e “It wasn’t planned it happened out of the blue and unintentionally this accident caused damage to whatever etc, so you put in a claim”. (Do we work on a 10% claim rate?, if so 1 person in 10 will put in a claim)

So how or why does the IC definition include that “external means” clause, what does that mean exactly. We have paid for accidental damage cover only to find that when we put in a claim that in order for the claim to be accepted as an accident, the said accident has to be caused by “a sudden external means”, what’s that all about ??????

Obviously accident has to have a definition for clarity, but there is no place for reference to “how” an accident occurred in that definition.

Its definitions like this one of “accidental damage” that cause me concerns they are used as get out clauses and loopholes by the IC’s. Definitions are an area of great mistrust to me.

We the policy holder would have no idea what is meant by “sudden external means”, can any of you Insurance bods justify its place in a definition of accidental?

Can any of you explain the meaning of “sudden external means” to us mere thick policy holders?, My guess is no you cant, you cant defend the undefendable.

I can but I can't be bothered. What you really want us all to have is basically a maintenance contract - something that an insurance policy isn't meant to be.

Is English your second language? Which bit of 'sudden external means' are you struggling with?
