Try using a steam cleaner to get the marks out. I've managed to shift gloss paint in this way before.0

Arguably there issome wisdom in your idea looby, it’s a kind of self insurance.
“I choose the lowest premium with the highest excess as I can really only think that I would claim for fire or a big burglary. The money I save doing this would go towards replacing things I accidentally damaged”
“I wouldn't jump into paying for accidental damage before adding up if it is worth it for you”
Like wammy says
“Accidental damage isn't automatically included in contents insurance, it is an optional extra”.
“I didn't have it to start with then did add it on for a few years. I burnt a bedroom carpet and enquired about claiming. Between the £50 excess and the increase in my premiums for having a claim, it just wasn't worth it”.
“I saved about £80 a year dropping the accidental damage option and reckoned over 5 years, even if I had one incident, that £400 saved would probably cover it”. Again a type of self insurance.
Birdy suggests “But it would appear that this particular insurance company has served you well for 15 years”
Only you can answer this, have you claimed? Or have you just paid your premiums without claiming.
Anyway as stated its apparently optional, so if you take out accidental damage you are covered for accidents yes?, excuse my pessimism but it aint that simple, you will first be made to feel it wasn’t an accident and that you staged it. And then consider what the IC’s “definition” of an accident is the chances are it will not be anything like our definition would be. If it’s anything like their definition of redundancy or any other of their definitions, it will have to bells on. But this is only my opinion.
So mac look at all the small print before hand, and make you decision accordingly, good luck.Campaigning to recycle Insurance Policies into Toilet Paper :rotfl:

Why criticise the insurer when it was you that chose not to have accidental damage cover?
The same outcome would occur with every other insurer out there if you didnt have accident damage cover either. It's an optional extra.you 'think' that you are covered and you're not is really really frustrating -
I understand your frustration but unless you use a broker, it is your responsibility to make sure what you have fits your needs. The insurer will just provide the cover you tell them to.
There are other optional extras on home insurance as well. You may wish to check those out just in case you fall foul of this again.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). OP you will probably find you are covered for major accidental damage for things that would make life impossible eg : broken windows, damaged sanitary fittings, and a lot of basic policies even cover your elec and pc equiptment, but you would have to make the effort to find out rather than wait til after something has happened. If you cannot be bothered to read the details even though you have had these documents for 15 years and have been asked to check your renewal documents every year before paying even on continous renewal you are asked to check the cover still meets your needs if you have problems reading you can phone and ask the company am I covered for this or even more generally ask what am I covered for. All I can say is it is your own fault. Buy a rug and get over it. Dont blame a company for your own laziness in checking the details of what you spend your money on.0

What's on earth is the point in buying insurance if you don't know what's covered?! That's like going into a supermarket and buying a sealed black box labelled "stuff" to replace your weekly shop!
On the plus side, the OP has saved 15 years of accidental damage premiums, which may well be enough of a saving to pay for a replacement carpet.0 -

I havent claimed before and was a little stressed about it thinking the premium would go up. After a chat with the woman on the end of the phone who as me what had happened etc she politely proceeded to inform me that i would not be covered as i do not have accidental damage cover!!!!!!!! I have had home and contents insurance for 15 yrs on my house and have brought up 3 children and she now tells me that i dont have accidental damage!!!!!! well what have i been paying insurance for then? i am absolutely gobsmacked and have read through the policy to check and there at the end of all the blurb is a small line which reads: Accidental damage - not covered. So after 3 more bottles of nail varnsh remover, paint cleaner, carpet stain removal i have a light pink stain on my cream carpet! and i am looking at alternative provisions for insurance as the blasted company that i have been with for 15 years can go and stick their 'so called' insurance somewhere else!!
Thanks for listening - but check your policy too!!
So you didnt read the policy or you chose not to pay the extra for accidental damage and now you expect to be covered.
Is this a wind up - seriously? How can you expect to be covered for something you aint paid for?0 -
macavity01 wrote: »Yep hands up - its all my fault = I found this statement below by someone on here - and it so fits in with me.
I know i am ultimately at fault but if everyone reads every thing that they are given with regard to insurances (car, life, holiday etc) then good for them they obviously have nothing else would tdo. I really thought that Insurance cover for your home would surely be for accidental damage - maybe if i spilt the varnish on purpose it wouldnt be an accident and i could have claimed!!
"Anyone who doesn't read the T&Cs wants their head looking at. That'll be most people then, as they are writen in such a way as to confuse, being subjective doesnt help matters."
Thanks for your comments!
Yeh. But accidental damage is an IMPORTANT option.
Its like saying you've got insurance but not knowing difference between buildings and contents !!!!0 -
macavity01 wrote: »Yeah my husband is going to call them and ask for accidental damage cover - my mother in law doesnt have it on her policy ether after speaking with her last night, so she is now worrying! i presume its an opt in option on the form. We purchased our house at the time and there were loads of documents to complete at the time which is of course no defence but i still cant believe you have to opt in to this type of cover!! thanks for your comments.
 Oh dear - what can I say !!!0
