no advertising but I'm nosy, I mean, curious!

I completely agree and support Martin's rule that this NOT the place to advertise good for sale. But could we not share some details about the goods we sell without breaking the rule?

Mnay of the posters on these threads are extremely experienced and successful (not me, but I'm trying!). I think it would be fascinating to know what others sell successfully. And I expect that most people use a different name on ebay than on this board so revealing some info wouldn't give an unfair advantage against those who prefer not to.

Or maybe folks would feel that they were giving away precious trade secrets? Although there is so much competition on ebay I can't see it making much difference to divulge a bit.

I will if you will?(tell I mean).

  • I often wonder the same thing. You get used to the regular posters on this board giving great advice and most appear to have sucess on eBay with whatever they sell. I'm curious as to what others sell but I can appreciate though that many would not like to disclose such information because of competitors.

Maybe you could start us off ksh123, what kind of products do you sell?

I hope this isn't breaking any rules, if it is I apologize.

I think most people who post here have to protect their livelihoods as that what it is for a handful of sellers here which I why most rightly won't post exactly what they sell as last thing anyone needs is more competition.

A lot of people will sell what they can get their hands on, special offers and the like.

Others sell stuff from car boot sales and fairs - random stuff but stuff they know through experience will sell - cds, ornaments, collectibles, books.

I sell mobile phones which is a new area for me but I have and do spend ages researching prices and see what sells. It's not an original area to sell in, but it works and I can sometimes make over 50% profit.

You just have to find an are you're comfortable with and able to supply - btw I still haven't found mine!

The rules don't preclude a discussion about items we sell generally, the rules just mean we can't actually link to our auctions with an intention to advertise or sell.

However, I always caution users to think carefully about giving away too much information nthat could enable them to be tracked down. I picked up a stalker once, almost certainly through a web group, who started to bid maliciously, whether through jealousy or annoyance with me I don't know.

Anyway a reading of the threads does give a very good idea what various areas we sell in.

Up until two years ago I was buying and selling laptops. I could make £50-£100 per machine which sounds good but it was never enough to live on. I don;t think it would work now though; machines I was selling for £500+ now go for about £150 or less which leaves little margin to cover increased fees.
I'm just starting the "big declutter" and expect to spend the next 3-5 years getting rid of stuff that we no longer want or need. We have a big house, attic, garage and outbuilding and everywhere is full of boxes!
    Can I help?
  • I sell china, both old and not so old

    - the good side is I often get prices that are far better than I'd hoped for

    - the bad side is the wrapping and packing has to be spot on, I spend a small fortune on bubblewrap as I need so much. RM Parcels doesn't cover for breakages, only loss so I have to make sure that nothing will ever break in the post, apart from that if it's something that's getting on for 100 years old it can't be replaced with another just like it if it gets damaged. Most of my customers can tell me a sorry story of a nice piece of china that turned up in pieces through lack of padding in the box

I commend all the posters for their views and respect people's need for privacy. But its the general stuff that fascinates me - as shared here. thanks to those who have.
I am also a de-clutterer. Used to be a less than enthusiastic car-booter (the rudeness of so often made it an unhappy experience unfortunately). While I don't always find e-bay easy and have had my share of problems I do find it much more lucrative and enjoyable than car booting.

So I sell lots of different stuff. My rubbish is another person's treasure blah blah and, am pleased to have found a way of assuaging guilt for purchases I neither needed nor could afford!

I've sold a huge variety of things on ebay. I've always been searching for that elusive product which would allow me to give up the day job!

Unfortunately, I've never been able to sell in sufficient quantity to make serious money. I am currently importing handicraft stuff to resell- makes a good profit of around 100%, but again, the market becomes saturated and prices drop if I list too much.

I've made around £1000 profit this year. So I need to find a way to scale up my operations by 6 times to make a wage. I doubt it'll ever happen, but will keep you posted. Also, a small percentage of buyers really give me grief by being completely unreasonable! I suppose the secret is to have such high turnover than any negatives are quickly buried.

I did sell sci fi stuff many years ago, but the market really dropped out of that once ebay became well established in the UK. It also attracted lots of students paying by postal orders, which was a nightmare trying to match POs with outstanding payments as most just turned in seveal weeks late in an envelope with nothing to identify the sender.

flippin eck Soo that must have been tricky to deal with!
I've just realised to respond to Razorbladekisses I should be a "bit" more specific: i.e I sell a few clothes, a few accessories, household/garden stuff, games, make-up and I'm going to try furniture today! As I said - de-cluttering. I fully expect to be an ebay millionaire in approximately 350 years!
