Rail Travel: Tips on Cheap Tickets

Ticket splitting question please, are they likely to check the tickets and ask questions as my daughter is travelling from Edinburgh to Warrington 28 March returning 2 April on her own with a Young Person's Railcard but I wouldn't want her questioned by the ticket collector.
Straight through using Trainline I have two single tickets totaling £26.30 but I'm wondering if I can do better?
Thanks!0 -
You could do better by not using the trainline - the train company sites offer the same prices and don't charge booking/card fees.
That looks a good fare - don't think you will better it by splitting. That works with full fares, not advance singles, as a general rule - though there can be exceptions
You could try Carlisle and/or Preston just in case.0 -
Well after lots of searching and looking around, I managed to get a train from Exeter to London Waterloo on Saturday 15th March and returning Sunday 16th March for £21. Initially it was looking like £35 return (a massive £70 for me and my gf return) however we found that by leaving an hour earlier (the 5.10am train) the price comes right down! :j :j :j
Only thing is I forgot to get my quidco cashback... although it isnt much! :rotfl:£4000 in 2011 - £48.88/£40000 -

I hadn't realised that Trainline now charge £1 for postage so I booked via Virgin yesterday morning and the tickets arrived today, so thanks for that, now just need to work out how to upload a "regulation" photo for the Young Person's Rail Card.0 -
Hi-Can anyone please help me-I'm currently pulling my hair out about trying to book this journey! Basically I need to book a train from London to Carlisle on the 4th April after 2pm-I've tried splitting the journey going via rugby, warrington etc but the cheapest i've found is £88! I got quoted £33 but it then turned out there was no seats left-typical!0

The £33 is showing as OK for me. Haven't gone beyond the first page though.
Otherwise if you are prepared for an indirect journey try splitting at Leeds or Newcastle0 -

Hi there, I really want to go see my friend's new baby in Brighton on saturday 10 May coming back the next day. I live in Scarborough, the cheapest I can see is by getting a saver return to doncaster at £31.20, then Don - Brighton 15.04 at £23 and Brighton - Doncaster 11.16 £30.50.
Its still a whacking ££84.70 though.
First time I've looked at this lark though so may be doing it completely wrong. Can anyone help?Cogito ergo sum. Google it you lazy sod !!0 -
