Rail Travel: Tips on Cheap Tickets

Hi folks,
I am having difficulty in getting some Saturday single tickets for my return journey - here are my travel details
Depart Chesterfield 15/5/08
Return London 17/5/08 [Saturday].
I can easily get singles for £7 each but on the Saturday there are no cheap singles and there never has been [as far as I can tell as I've been checking for weeks].
Any idea? Have they not been released? If not, when should I expect them?
Thanks
Alun

is a little old (updated 6 March) but suggests that tickets for that Saturday are not released yet.
As to when - no idea.0 -
I travel from Portsmouth to Canterbury West about once per month and with a student railcard, I am paying £34.95 for a saver return that enables me to return within 1 calendar month.
I was wondering, is there any way to cut this price further?
Not a big saving, and maybe a slow route - but if you travel off peak a Southern daysave (buy online a week in advance) will take you on Southern trains via Brighton to Ashford International for £10 each way. A single with a railcard on to Canterbury is £3.65 each way0 -
Has anyone got any experience of booking through "Railsaver" or "Raileasy"? They are offering discount prices for my trip, but .....? Are they known to be reliable?0

I believe they charge a (small) booking fee which other sites other than trainline don't.
Unless they are specifically offering you an extra discount for some reason, they just offer the same discount fares as available anywhere else. It's possible that they may be a bit better at finding them, but they have never shown me anything not available elsewhere.0 -
Anyone advise on cheapest rates for Wrexham to Cardiff going on 14th June and returning 15th June?
Its about £100 each on trainline and there are buses involved!0 -

Wait for the cheap rail tickets to be released - they are only out until mid May at the moment. Should be £10 each way if you get in early - assuming that they offer them. They don't always when buses are involved.
And don't use thetrainline - they charge a booking fee, etc. Any of the TOC sites will do it for free, as it were.0 -

Hi Alun, I need to go London to Chesterfield one way in 2 to 3 weeks time, not sure which date yet, where can you get the tickets for £7 please.
Thanks very much0 -

On any rail booking site. They all sell the same tickets
Megatrain is also worth a try as an alternative.0 -
Has anyone had any experience on Megatrain - how does it work?
Also, still struggling for my return tickets for 17 May from London-Chesterfield, and the outward portion of the trip is beginning to get full...
I did notice that there is one listed 1130 change at Nottingham - what has happened to the direct ones that normally run?
Is it worth waiting... because I would prefer an earlier train...0 -

Hi,
I beleive that the £7 single fares can only be bought with an accompanying return portion. So you may have to pay £14 but you don't have to use the return portion [if that makes sense].0
