  • Hi there been lurking on this great forum for ages but finally decided to join.

    Looking to go from Derby to Newcastle 15th June 10am onwards

    Return from Newcastle to Derby 17th June arrive before 21:30

    Best I can get so far is £43.10 Saver/Cheap Day Return with a young persons railcard, anyone know and cheap splits. Notice there are no value advances available, I assume this is because of engineering works and they have not been released yet, should I purchase now or hang fire and wait to see if any value adavance get released? Got the same journey for £18 in November of last year!

    Derby - Newcastle: £43.10 SVR with RNG

    Split ticket at York
    Derby - York: £20.75
    York - Newcastle: £20.15

    Total = £40.90 SVR with RNG
    Savings = £2.20 (not a lot, but every little helps!)

    Plus: Free tea and coffee on Midland Mainline trains (not Virgin or Central Trains) between Derby and Sheffield;

    and get 20% off food & drink at railway stations across the country with Bitecard - see: http://www.bitecard.co.uk/ for details

    Welcome aboard!

    May as well "hang fire" as the saver fare you quote is available to buy on the day so wait and keep checking for the VA tix.

    Looking to go GLASGOW - ELGIN. Friday - Sunday 25- 27 May.
    1 adult 1 child.

    Cheapest I can get is £49.85 saver return with family railcard.

    Anyone any ideas on how to get the price down a bit more.

    Thanks in advance.

    EDIT: Scotrail has CLUB 55 tickets (travel for over 55's)
    for £14 return (£18 first class). I put a search for 1 adult and 1 child and its letting me book 2 tickets @ £36. Does anyone know if these will be valid. i.e can one under 55 travel with an over 55 if you know what I mean. Doesn't say anything about this in t&c.

    thanks.

    It's likely to be an advance purchase single on Virgin trains in each direction. Alternatively if you can get to Derby, Midland Mainline also have similar deals.
  • First post so please forgive any mistakes:

    Right here goes travelling from Liverpool on the 28th may to Sheffield 1 adult 1 child any time after 10.am. I then wish to go to London (wembley) on the 28th 2 adults 1 child arriving before 2pm. I will then need to return to Sheffield the same day 28th, 2 adults 1 child probably about leaving London about 7.30pm . I will then be returning back to Liverpool on the 29th, 1 adult 1 child need to arrive at Liverpool before 1pm.

    Would it be possible to purchase 1 ticket for the whole journey ie Liverpool, sheffield london-london sheffiled Liverpool for myself and child even though it is over a number of days or break it down itno smaller journeys?

    any help would be greatly appreciated, travelling from the Isle of Man, these new fangled trains are so complicated;)

    Split ticket at Sheffield

    Liverpool - Sheffield: £21.95 Standard Saver Return (1 Adult + 1 Child with Family Railcard)

    Sheffield - Wembley Central: £90.50 Standard Saver Return (2 Adults + 1 Child with Family Railcard - Route +Chesterfield, i.e. fare includes transfer from St Pancras to Euston by underground)

    Total = £112.45

    There is a Virgin Low Saver Return from Douglas Isle of Man to Wembley Central at £72.00 for 1 Adult and £20.00 for 1 Child with Family Railcard i.e. £92.00 in total but I don't know what the terms and conditions/restrictions are for this ticket.

    Unfortunately, if you leave Liverpool after 10am by getting the 1014 to Sheffield changing at Manchester Piccadilly, you won't be at Wembley Central until 1638 - getting the 1238 from Sheffield changing at Grantham to King's Cross and then tube to Euston for the 1617 Silverlink train to Wembley Central.

    In order to get to Wembley Central by 2pm, you will need to get the 0956 from Sheffield direct to St Pancras, which means getting the 0747 from Liverpool Lime Street direct to Sheffield.

    You will then need to get the 1925 from Wembley Central to Euston, get the tube to St Pancras to connect to the 2030 from St Pancras to Sheffield, arriving Sheffield at 2316.

    'If there is a long queue at the ticket office, or for some other reason you don't want to buy your ticket before travelling, then ask permission from anyone yuo can find in railway uniform. You then have "authority to travel" and so should be able to buy the same ticket from the conductor on the train as you would have bought from the ticket office.'

    You can't get 'authority to travel' and buy teh ticeket of your choiceunde those circumstances, though you may bully the conductor into doing it to shut you up. If you have had your wallet stolen and have a police crime number, you will be asked for your details for an unpaid fare notice.

    Ticket prices go up for several reasons: operating costs; fraudluent travel, % of faredodgers, and inflation.

    I agree, yes try to find the cheapest ticket, but NOT by telling someone that if they've travelled and their ticekt hasn't been stamped that it's OK to get a refund for it, it is not - it IS fraud. This was posted early on in the thread and was what made me post in the first place.
