I'm going to the British Open next week and will be departing from an unstaffed train station. There are also no self-service machines at the station.
So how do I buy tickets ? I presume that I just get on the train and get one from the conductor ? I also presume that I won't be fined for not having a valid ticket when I got on the train.
I'm also looking to get a anytime cheap day return. Does this mean that I can travel anytime between 0700hrs till 2200hrs; or are there restrictions ? If I buy the ticket from the conductor, would it cost me more than buying it at a ticket office or on-line ?
I'm an infrequent user of trains so would be very grateful for any advice.0 -
From an unstaffed station with no ticket machines you buy the ticket on the train at the same price at a ticket office or online.
If you buy an ANYTIME day return it's valid on any train on the day it's issued for. If you buy an OFF PEAK day return it's valid on any off peak train on the day it's issued for. On some lines all trains are offpeak.
Where are you travelling from? There may be for example be a split ticket that could save you a bit. If it's the Liverpool area then that's almost certainly the case0 -
Thanks. I have justed checked thetrainline.com website and I can get an anytime day return and it only costs 40p more than an off-peak return ticket. It an't worth splitting the tickets as it is just a handful of stops from start to finish.0

As that route is a Arriva Crosscrounty route it's going to be an expensive one, however, you could split at the following;
Sheffield, Derby, Birmingham NS, Cheltenham Spa.
But the best way to save money is to go 'via London' enter this on you train website search engine 'more/advance options' to get some cheap advance tickets the earlier you book the cheaper it is, East Coast Website offer a 10% online discount as well.
Through the East Coast Website you can also get 3+ group discounts on you journey book/info hereWhoa! This image violates our terms of use and has been removed from view0 -

Split at Manchester Piccadilly, it's possible to get the walk on fare of £119.10 down to £94.50 using advance tickets but timings ain't great
Also give yourself plenty of time to get from the upper platforms to the main concourse at Piccadilly.Whoa! This image violates our terms of use and has been removed from view0
