Rail Travel: Tips on Cheap Tickets

That particular ticket is only sold on Saturdays AFAIK
IIRC you don't HAVE to reserve the return leg - but the trains on which it is valid vary from week to week so the 2011 would not show up every week.0 -

If you try Mon 15th Aug out and Fri 19th Aug Rtn then there's advance singles available from £16.85 One way, but have anti social timings, better timings are available from £42.35 one way.
My advice keep checking the East Coast Website as they will release the advance singles for your dates soon, normally Friday Mornings, so defiantly check tomorrow late afternoon.
Livingthedream - Just want to say a very big thankyou for your advice.
Last night I checked the EastCoast website, and I'm extremely pleased to say that we have book reserved seats to London from S'boro for £32.95 going (for all three of us), and £54.45 for the return journey.:T
Its a huge saving on what we were quoted just a week ago, so thank you for suggesting we hold out.
I'm just so so happy .....:j
Thank you

what would be the most cost-effective way of split-ticketing between Inverness and Derby, hopefully keeping the changing of trains down to a minimum too?0

You could try one of the following;
Derby - Manchester Pic - Inverness
Derby - Edinburgh - Inverness
Derby - Glasgow - Inverness
Derby - Darlington - Inverness
Derby - York - Inverness
Or a mixture of all five, keeping the changes down can be difficult especially if advance tickets are involved.Whoa! This image violates our terms of use and has been removed from view0 -
Hi all,
Me and my wife are travelling to Carbis Bay, Cornwall on Monday 25th July from London, returning on Friday 29th. We don't have a car at the moment, and are looking to do the long journey by train! Looking on all the rail travel websites, the cheapest tickets I can find is about £79 for two singles each way, so £158 in total. The hotel is already booked and the dates set so I can't change to a cheaper sleeper train. We'd prefer not to leave at 6am, more around 10am. Does anyone have any split ticketing ideas? I've tried splitting at Exeter St Davids but that only saved me £2, unless I was doing it wrong! We have a Network Railcard and a Family and Friends Railcard if that's any help.
Any advice would be much appreciated!0 -

You could try this and use Megabus, they do train as well but unfortunately they have only released their cheap tickets until 19th July, hopefully they should release them this week;
London Waterloo to Exeter St Davids. Megabus from £6 per person one way.
Exeter St Davids to Carbis bay. Advance singles from £6 per person one way.
But give yourself plenty of time to make your connections at Exeter, both are types of advance tickets so you must travel on Booked trains.Whoa! This image violates our terms of use and has been removed from view0 -

Are you planning on doing more rail travel around the area during that period? If so, roughly whereabout do you wish to cover?0 -
Have a look at South West trains from Waterloo to Exeter - at the moment you could do that section for £72 return total for the two of you with your Network Railcard.
A walkon return Exeter on to Carbis Bay is £34 each and you could shave a bit off that with advance singles. Allow plenty of connecting time if you go for the advances.0 -
@bb21: Well, we really will probably stay around Carbis Bay and St Ives area I think. We weren't planning to travel all around that much as it will be our honeymoon!
@LivingtheDream: Thanks for your reply. Where did you find those tickets from Exeter to Carbis Bay? Megabus doesn't seem to provide Carbis Bay as a destination from Exeter.0 -

From the East Coast Website ,however, on a quick look there's only the one train at that price and it's a bit to early for you the average price after that is around £11.50 to £15 each (but don't buy 2 advance singles if the total is greater than £34 as it's not good value for money, the Off Peak Return is better value then).
Yes, unfortunately Megabus don't do Exeter St D to Carbis Bay.Whoa! This image violates our terms of use and has been removed from view0
