Going from Leicester to Manchester tomorrow after 9am, returning Sunday afternoon. Looking for cheaper than £38.10 return.

    Go Go Go!
    Rather short notice, but...

For the return leg there are some £15 Advance Singles available.

The outward leg is more tricky.
Advance Singles at £7 are there from Leicester to Birmingham.
Advance Singles from Birmingham to Manchester are available for £13.

So it can be done for £35.00.

    Info from East Coast Trains.

Remember that with Advance Singles you must travel on the booked train.
Whether a £3 saving for the loss of flexibility is worth it... you decide.

London Bridge is the nearest underground station.

A one day off peak travelcard is £89.00.
Thats total return for all three of you including tube from Kings Cross to London Bridge.

Unfortunately the earliest return train with that ticket leaves Kings Cross at 19:33.

    Info from East Coast Trains.

    Edited to add...

Get a Family and Friends Railcard and that price above drops to £53.75.

See here to get 25% off a F&F Railcard... down to £19.50.
    (offer until 01 Oct 2010)

What is a ova 50 thingy?

Anyway, that aside for the minute, an Advance Single is available on that date for £18.50.
Dep Carmarthen 08:30, arr Worthing 14:54.

If the ova 50 thingy is a Senior Railcard (which is actually an ova 60 thingy), that fare drops to £12.20.

    Info from East Coast Trains.

  • hello having read form and martins main section ,
my wife and i (under 60) wish to travel from NTA newton abbot to HWV heathrow T5.

even splitting at BRI bristol on the trainline it is £57 one way.

we are due to travel on 16/jan which i know is more than 12 weeks away BUT if you work out 12 weeks ahead from today ( and everyday as i check every morning in antisipation to the 12 week special!) it does not come.
is the new base level of train tickets now £57?
this seems to go against the 12 week booking theme,

to make things slightly more difficult we are returning on the 7th march which is way too far off.

any advise and suggestions greatfully received

You can get fares for £21.70 each one way by searching Newton Abbot to Heathrow rail and advanced options 'avoid London'

    Or

Try splitting at London or Reading and use this website to see when the cheap advance singles are released, as the 12 week rule is more of a guideline than the norm.

As to your return journey, hopefully by the time you leave in Jan the train companies should have release the advance singles for March.:o

But give yourself plenty of time to catch your London/Reading to Newton Abbot train just incase your flight gets delayed, better a couple of hours in London shopping than miss your train and having to buy new tickets.

First money saving tip on rail fares - DON'T use the trainline.com !!!!

    Use one of the TOCs.
