Thanks Miller - I think your suggestion is a great one. I'm going to suggest it to DD and if she doesn't give it a go on her own then she can't be that serious about that particular University. I will be visiting some others with her so it seems a good compromise!

    Thanks, Narla x

    As hopefulfooluk says... wait!

If you look at the monday before, 6 Dec, you will see that those £3.30 tickets are there.

    Keep checking every day now.

Thanks for your help on this. I have checked again today (after an e-mail saying cheap tickets were on sale through Trainline.com) and the cheapest i can find after 15.30 is £34

Does anyone know if further cheap tickets may come on sale or whether i should just cough up? I am determined to find the cheapest train route possible if i can, although it does need to be a train and not a coach

Any help is really appreciated. Many thanks

Once they are fully there, it is rare for additional cheap tickets to become available

However you can beat £34 with a walkon ticket - so there's absolutely no point in buying that fare now

£17.10 off peak day single with London Midland (railcard fare). If you can leave at 1554 cheaper still (£11.50 superoffpeak)

From Marylebone via High Wycombe £20.40 - a quicker journey. If you can wait until 8pm superoffpeak single £12.80.

All the above you can buy on the day at the same price

And in the evening, after the peak, there are advance singles from Euston for £4 to £6 ish.

On 13 Dec I can see Advance Single tickets at £4.60. These are with Virgin Trains.

I believe the Chiltern Railways and London Midland Advance Singles, which may well be cheaper but for a slower journey, are still to come.

At the moment you need to wait until 8:23pm before leaving London at £4.60. But that is a quick 1hr 23min journey.

    Info from East Coast Trains.
  • Thanks again for all the replies and help, i forgot to say it was for 2 people - hence the £34 element. I'll look into the Virgin trains option

I needed to go to Scotland next week for a funeral and the best fare I could find was (singles Harrogate to Glassgow) £71.60p I had to travel not on my first choice but on the 11.04 train as the 9.05 and the 10.4 was much more expensive. Coming back I had to travel on the 3pm train and on both journeys I have 2 changes York and Edinburgh but the single for the direct York was £120!
I decided in the end not to travel First as it was costing me £97. I also had to pay £5 for special delivery as Harrogate was not a Station where tickets could be collected.
Due to the fact that I am travelling next week and a lot of hotels had no availability. Hotels with availibility were very expensive for anything decent and even Premier Inn was £86 room only not where I would want to be in the city at night. Not sure about various streets etc. Express Holiday Inn in the city centre was £140 per night. Jury's 3* was £140 also and a 4* was going to cost me in excess of £300 - £400 and some rooms were just room only.
I was fortunate to find the Sherwood Castle Hotel in the south side of the city. It looks a truly beautiful hotel with only 18 rooms and had a multimillion refit recently Reviews on Trip Advisor are excellent.

I have paid £105 per night including breakfast and I am looking forward to my roll top bath etc.

    Sue

Have another look at that outward leg at £31.50.
Did you notice the fourteen hour journey with an over five hour wait on Crewe platform?

If that's not ok, try getting Advance Singles to Exeter St Davids from Preston.
There are a few cheap singles from Exeter to Falmouth at £6-ish, but there is a bus for part of the journey on that Sunday.

Thanks. Checked again & noticed it only gave last train on Sun, rest were Mon so did earlier times & found 1 leaving at 14.05 bit of funny journey & a bus at 1 point (but that's normal for a lot of stations on Sun, due to works) but journey time is less 8hrs 53 mins. Thanks for tip re: Exeter
