well im waiting on mrs custard getting home as i cant find any erasors to clean the ram connections
once i get that i'll clean them up and start again.
just seems weird that both sticks are faulty, totally possible though with my luck
however with the old 512mb of ram fitted the PC is transferring files from the external hard drive just fine(with memtest running) which means somthings not right on the ram front

    right then,this is tiresome

    been running memtest
when i ran the old ddr 400 ram (2x 256mb) it reported no ram issues in mem test
running the 2x 512mb ddr 400 sticks gave errors in mem test
now ive removed a 1gb stick of ddr 400 from one of my own PC's (it runs 2x1gb DDR 400 on windows 7) and memtest reports problems with this ram as well!!!
the pc running windows 7 is really a spare machine that hasnt missed a beat since i last upgraded its mobo/ram/cpu easily over 2 years ago

    thanks for the idea

i got to the point where it was obvious there was nothing physical i could find
so i tried playing with the voltages
dropped it to 333 from 400 default
ram seems stable with no errors in memtest
messed around with some voltages over 400,some worked, some didnt boot
went as high as 494 which seemed to work.

right now im running a few apps/tests at 333 to see how it runs
not ideal but as long as its stable and provides better performace than the old celeron set up then it will probably do
