well ive rebuilt the problem set up again and get no display still
pc (it seems) boots up as normal and stays stable.
just to output to the monitor
so whats the thought, could a dead CPU cause this? or is more likely a mobo issue?
i see no damage on the mobo at all.
the only points of the case in contact with the mobo are the mounting points and all tally with a mounting point on the mobo.0 -
Have a close look at all the capacitors, I've seen hundreds of boards die due to the capacitors. They appear to swell at the top which can cause a small split in the casing and allow the contents to dry out which stops them working and can cause all manner of problems, including the kind of problems your getting.
Do a google search for motherboard capacitors and you'll see plenty of examples."Hey, if love is blind, how come lingerie is so popular?" Cochrane. P673 TNG.0 -

i didnt see anything
i had a good look over the board before refitting it
i had found some posts on capacitor issues so had a good look over them
one thing i did notice was a bit of thermal paste resiue on the bottom of the board(thought it was exposed traces at first!)
so im wondering if the seller (re?)fitted the CPU to this board before selling,so it could be a dead/damaged CPU in a working board?0 -
many thermal pastes are conductive..so any sat on the bottom of the board is probably not a good thingUtinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0

when i say residue it was a very small fine amount
just that i was inspecting the board closely0 -
well fixed it
i wasnt going to open up the heatsink for fear of damage but decided to
turns out whoever fitted the CPU didnt lock it down so it was just sitting in the holder!!
properly fitted and running fine0 -
Good you sorted it custardy0

lol when this one started playing up the owner(ex mother inlaw)
phoned up virgin telling them her pc was slow and she couldnt get facebook bejewled to work :rotfl:0 -
cant believe the grief im having with this.
im not even charging costs on this!!!!
right i had a ide error which i eventually tracked down to an old 40 wire ide cable on the hard drives.
so after that all running fine. installed some progs, overclocked it to 3.06ghz to see how it ran.
no problems
then went to download office from M$(have a serial but not the discs here)
pc crashes
reload the default bios values
reboot, generic 'recovered from serious error message"
try a few more times with the same
then try transferring a load of old files back from the external drive
approx 50GB
as soon as it starts copying over, same crash and error
so i think hard drives. run disk check, disk keeper pro and seagate disc tools
no errors on any
so think ram next
fire up mem test and get errors
so try various combinations of the 2 512mb sticks in the 2 slots.
all producing errors
drop in an old pair of 256mb sticks (slower ram though) and so far i have no errors in mem test.
so can i 'safely' say the ram is at fault here?0
