AVG for me, it's free and updates automatically when it needs to, never ever had a problem with it.
I love my spell checker, it stops me making all sorts of stupid smelling mistakes.

AVG for me, when I swapped from Norton to AVG, AVG found about 30 trojans/viruses.

Another vote the excellent and free AVG from http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5

I always set it to update overnight (I tend to leave my computer on all the time and as far as I can tell it's never let me down in any way. Tremendous software and amazing to think it's free!

if you want a good one, i strongly recommend Kaspersky or BitDefender (not free)... much better than Avast and AVG in my opinion... personal choice i guess... download trial versions and experiment with them

I'm trying out AntiVir at the mo. Another free one that looks quite good.

Certaintly quicker than avast! but the lack of customising suggests it doesn't have as many features. Weather I need the features, I'm not sure.

Norton - Avoid, avoid, avoid! In my experience - Bloated and buggy!

There's been plenty of good free AV software suggested on this thread and others if you do a search.
  • When my Norton 2002 sub ran out, I took the plunge and went for a free program. I first tried Avast, but one of it's processes hogged my CPU, and the online forums were filled with similar complaints. The only reply from the Avast people was "It must be busy for a reason" So I ditched Avast within 48 hours, tried AVG and haven't looked back. :j

Don't forget you'll need Spyware and firewall software as well.

For all the best freeware stuff, don't forget the 46 best freeware utilities site, which someone pointed out a while ago on this site - well worth a look at.
