    my mum used to make this all the time in the early 1970s. she owned just 3 recipe books - one was a notebook filled with clippings and recipes from friends, one was Mrs Beetons Household Management (a wedding present) and the other was the very much used Pennywise Cookbook (think this was 'bought' with coupons from somewhere).

    pennywise was a fantastic book from what i recall and i'm pretty sure it has the magic lemon in it.

    With regards to the mince dishes, do any of you do the initial braising technique? I haven't, but it looks quite interesting, and I might give it a go....once it is done, I can freeze it, can't I?:D

    I did this recipe but used streaky bacon and some mushrooms, and penne pasta rather than buying macaroni, dh really liked it with the tomato topping, DS2 thought it was great (but then he is a cheese fiend), DS1 wasn't eating that night and I really liked it as well, so this will be made again.

    From the ingredients I would say that magic lemon pud might be what my Mum used to call Sussex Pond Pudding - a steamed pud with a whole lemon in it which made it's own sharp/sweet buttery sauce when cut open.
