I did a sort of recipe from last night. I did the shepherds pie but used left over chicken and ham, fried some swede, sweetcorn and carrots and topped with mash (mashed in the food processor) and it was lovely.

All their recipes (and those of many other chefs) these days consist entirely of: chuck it in the food processor, chuck it in ... and that ... chuck that in .. .whiz it.
Well, I don't have one.
I do have a small Rosemary Conley something or other that is like a stick blender but also has a small cup ... it also chops veg and nuts ... and I often wonder if that does the same job (although it's nowhere near the same size.
I did think the lady this week was a right wally when she whizzed the green stuff.0 -

Thanks, I really needed convincing after four days of reading 111 pages of this thread whether to get the book or not. :rotfl: Wow, what a thread!!
Just put my order in from the Book Depository (Free Post) all the way to NZ, so hope it doesn't take too long to get here. I've already got some recipes thanks to this thread and have ingredients to make the Beef Daube and Pasties this weekend.Mortgage

"Oh, we've got unexpected guests - lucky we've got this splendid joint of beef/brace of seabass/piece of salmon/etc, etc....."
Am I really the least cynical person about ? Of course it was on the mealplan - the mealplan is set for the whole week, including the day the chefs return to check on the family's progress. The catch is simply that the joint or fish in question are intended to feed the family alone, not any extra guests - all the chefs are doing is showing them how to stretch it far enough to feed unexpected guests by using up whatever else they have knocking about plus "a small budget of £2.50 per guest".
Not really all that impressive when you are expecting to be shown how to turn water into wine and other equally useful stuff, granted - a modicum of common sense and no magic involved - but, like the rest of the show, often a revelation to the people in question.
Of course, as a dedicated moneysaver and oldstyler, any unexpected guests arriving at my doorstep would be sent out to forage for their own food. And I'd charge them £2.50 per head preparation costs.0 -
Black beans can be found in some asian shops. I bet for people living in areas with a high ethnic population, the local Tesco even has an aisle with them in - I've noticed where I live there is an aisle of foreign foods, aimed at various nationalities.
In fact, I just did a google and Tesco stock Tropical Sun Black Beans at 59p for a 400g tin. http://www.mysupermarket.co.uk/tesco-price-comparison/Tinned_Beans/Tropical_Sun_Black_Beans_400g.html0 -
Well I made the meatball recipe on Wednesday and it was delicious!! :j
A thumbs up from the entire family.
I did use 750g of pork mince but manage to freeze 2 portions which is great.
I didn't use a fennel head in the end as I was worried that the aniseed taste might be too strong and didn't want to ruin the recipe. Like another MSEr I substituted it for mushrooms.
The chorizo was a lovely addition to it. I tried to peel off the papery skin but gave up in the end and just chopped it as it was. We survived! lol
I do think next time I shall use tinned toms and onions for the tom sauce rather than fresh toms and shallots. How many tins do you think I would need please?
I have family over for Boxing Day and was wondering what to cook so think I may well do this as I can prepare the tom sauce in advance and the rest is easy. :T
Very tempted to get the book.....Ageing is a privilege not everyone gets.

I bought all the things in today to make the Quasideillas (sp) but I could not find black beans!! Is there anything else I could use instead? Something that would work well with the spices etc.
Really am clueless when it comes to adapting things, especially since I don't know what a black bean tastes like so can't really think of something to compare it too!
I thought there was only going to be 6episodes? Glad there is more!0 -
