I made them in the oven this week.

I used that new spray oil (Philip Berrier or something like that). I sprayed the oven tray, then put the bhajis on the tray, then sprayed the tops of the bhajis.

Like you, I don't deep fry.

How did they turn out? I really fancy the Indian meal.

Penny - thanks for the info on the green cone...I will contact my council about introducing discounted ones. We've been on the fortnightly collections for years!

thifty - I think it was you who asked about why people stick to recipes? It might not have been, so apologies (I did a multi quote, but it appears to have dropped off ) I used to do this. I guess I was scared that things wouldn't work out properly. Probably a confidence thing. However, I'm pleased to say that since I discovered the OS boards I have been adapting, choppping and changing to use up things lurking in the fridge and I'm so glad I have :D

I think the bedrock recipe this week will be roast chicken ;)

I made the Bakewell in a Bag yesterday. Unfortunately, I have an ancient oven that I am still getting used to. I cooked it for 25 mins and burnt it :o It was edible, just not as nice as I had hoped. I'll certainly try it again :D

I am looking forward to seeing how the students get on. Roll on Wednesday.

Me too. When I was at uni (went in 1996) I used to spend £8 a week on shopping so that I had enough beer money left... :o I can remember eating a lot of pasta, noodle soup, microwave baked potatoes and beans on toast. Everything was Tesco value, at the time all of the supermarkets were in a major price war and you could buy loaves of bread for 15p and tins of beans for 9p. How on earth I survived, let alone ingested enough nutrients to study and get a degree, I don't know. I used to have a Saturday night takeaway curry (I went to Birmingham uni, Balti capital of the universe) but I used to save half of it to reheat for dinner the next day! I was living on a student grant (back in the day...) but I don't think I would have eaten that much better even if I had loads of money, I suppose I probably would just have eaten more takeaways!

I used to spend £5 a week tops when I was at uni in the early 90s.. Didnt get much grant and never went out on the beer. But for that I could usually have chicken once a week and a treat of bacon and fresh oj on Sundays. We didnt have the luxury of value stuff and the only supermarket we could access was Morrisons. We did have a store called Jack Fultons which meant we could get cheap meat etc for those who ate it.I remember I ate a lot of noodles but also cooked for myself. I had all the Cas Clarke books and will recommend them to students to this day.

How much did they say that the students in next week's programme were spending?

Seems that things must have changed a lot since the 90s and our budgets of well under a tenner if they need Economy Gastronomy!

Can I ask if the free delivery is with Waitrose or with Ocado?

I love Waitrose too, and yes my butcher is more expensive but I make use of his good value freezer packs;)

the good thing is Waitrose is free.....the bad is you can't access them through mysupermarket.com
Ocado sell waitrose food but charge for delivery but for some strange reason give you a free copy of the times!!!!Watch out for Ocado offering free delivery and a discount if you then sign up for the years worth of delivery at a charge (sorry don't know how much)

I use Waitrose when I don't have a Tesco code for free delivery or points.Have to weigh up savings as lose out on tesco points if go to Waitrose (my JL card does give some cashback but not as good as Tesco Deals!!!) all very complicated
  • When i was a student (1995-1999, one year of which was spent in Europe), I used to spend maybe £15 a week on food. However, that was in addition to everything that my mam used to send me back to uni with on a Sunday afternoon. I used to go home every Friday to Sunday and used to come back laden with foil cartons of everything that my mam had been cooking during the week: stew, chicken curry, mince, bolognese, etc., as well as stuff that she was clearing out of her freezer - odd pork chops, half bags of frozen rice, bits of frozen veg, etc. (I don't think these actually needed using up; it was just her clever way of making sure that I was eating some decent food)

I used to top this up with weekly shops at Food Giant (got taken over by Somerfield I believe) and a cheapy frozen food shop along the lines of Farmfoods / Heron - bread, milk, potatoes, soups, eggs, drinks, etc.

We also used to communally make what we called "random recipes" - we'd share whatever bits and bobs we had left - an onion from one person, a tin of tomatoes from another, a tin of beans from someone else, a potato from another and create a dish to feed us all. There some really tasty concoctions. I often wish that we'd written our "potions" down!!!

When I lived in France, I used to eat mainly couscous or rice with chicken, and baguettes with tuna mayonnaise with paprika crisps! In Germany, it was bake at home bread rolls with cheese and strawberry jam or sandwiches made with cooked meats and cheeses from the Plusmarkt - a discount chain similar to Aldi or Lidl, I think.

Right, Ive bought the book and now have the boiled ham on the go in the slow cooker. I have also added some red lentils and some potatoes to the bedrock recipe as this can then make a soup up when the ham is cooked.

    Hope it turns out okay

Add the onion last, you will think there is not a lot of the gram flour mixture, but it seems to swell when you cook it.

If you are oven baking the bhajis (like me) cook the onions first, I didn't & I should have.

Home made chapatis are fantastic & easy & yummy too, won't be buying them in the shop again.

Thank You, I will get them to sort the salmon out for me then....when I get round to going and getting one.

I really hope there are a few nice pasta dishes next week, as I am starting University in September, and will need to cut both spending and time spent cooking....I know dh and the kids LOVE pasta, and dh and I love rice dishes, so I think we will be eating plenty of those kinds of things.
