just had a BBQ(yeah I know I should not have beleived the forecast of sun!!!!going to change out of my shorts into jeans and jumper after this!)
I had a Waitrose delivery(free these days) and ordered mostly stuff on offer.what amazed me most was when OH commented on the food and asked the price compared with last BBQ when I went to local butcher. For 8 burgers and 8 sausages the bucher charged around £10 but the same items from waitrose(actually they were a lot tastier!) cost around £7.50so much for Waitrose being expensive .....no wonder local shops go under if they charge so much more,no prizes for guessing where i will be shopping now!(also don't have to go in the car as free delivery

Funny you should ask - I bought it at a bootsale this moring for 50p! I haven't had a chance to look at it properly as my mum nabbed it for a browse when we popped in on the way home, but from the bit I read on the journey home (DH was driving I hasten to add) it looked ok.
One I would recommend is this
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Feeding-Nation-Nostalgic-Recipes-1940-1954/dp/0600614727/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1251643278&sr=8-1
which seems to have far more 'genuine' wartime recipes. I made the bacon and leek pasties and the sausage and corned beef meat loaf and they are both delicious.
So what is the general concensus on the EG book - worth the Amazon tenner or not? I really want the salmon cakes recipe but it's not on the website so I'm very tempted!Oh dear, here we go again.0 -

I love Waitrose too, and yes my butcher is more expensive but I make use of his good value freezer packs;)0 -

You can buy veggie hotdogs- I think sainsburys sells them in their own brand and possabily asda & morrisons sell them in the freezer section. The used to sell trivel ones in holland and barrett but they seem to have stopped them.
If you are using the cauldron sausages the linconshire ones might be better but are heavier than hot dog sausages.
Thanks, I don't think I ever ate Hot Dogs when I ate meat (over 18 years ago), they smell rank. :rotfl:Nevermind the dog, beware of the kids!0 -
So, tonight I am making my own mdified version of chicken and biryani
Chicken - made as recipe. Added honey and garam masala
Biryani -
Replaced biryani rice with brown
Replaced mushrooms with peppers
Replaced tinfoil with greaseproof
Replaced tomato with Sweetcorn
I'm using all frozen veg and am excpetionally dubious how it will turn out. The chicken looks gorgeous. Quiality control (me):rotfl: have reported it is satisfactory and devine. :T
Will report back on the Biryani . I was so determined not to go to the shops today! I shall make do!:oA little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

The recipes that don't seem to be included in the book are the ones in the last section of the programme, where guests are invited and the team cooks for them with the food that is already in the house. Well...that is apart from a 'measly' £2.50 extra per guest.
I suppose the idea is that there isn't a pre-ordained recipe as such, more of a 'Ready Steady Cook' approach attack on the fridge and freezer. I was a little irritated by this until I considered the matter. I'm not bothered about the soggy chocolate pud recipe as Nigella Lawson has a reliable one (PM wasn't sure whether his would work or not!), but would have liked the vegetable and goat's cheese tart recipe from the first programme.
I'm really enjoying the programme and have bought the book, which is fab. I served the Quesedillas on the campsite to the other families last week. Also did them for dd to take to a party. Folks very impressed. Our minestrone type soup that we did in camp almost matched the one in the book and we didn't have any recipe at all, just used our leftovers from the three families...including garlic croutons from the end of my HM loaf that I had taken with me. The kids would have hoovered up another 2 bowls each, but we were 9 at that meal and I only had 'ordinary' sized pans with me!
We do tend to eat to a good standard when we're camping. Nice not to waste stuff even when you're on hols though!"Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

When they had friends round for dinner and put together a meal......did they use frozen prawns?
That house has an uncanny resemblance to mine actually
It's a good programme and Allegra is such an enthusiastic jolly character.
I havent caught up with all posts on this thread yet as been a busy few days. Watched the last of episode 3 this morning (dont you just love bank holidays). I also found it rather intriguing how Paul and Allegra say, we havent just come round to see how you have got on, we have these people coming round for dinner and they will be here in 3 hours etc etc and then out of the freezer comes frozen prawns?! How can the prawns be safely defrosted and cooked etc in time for when the guests arrive? I know the prawns are only small and wont take long to defrost but......
I am looking forward to seeing how the students get on. Roll on Wednesday.0 -

Next time you go camping can you tell me where you're going, so that we can pitch our tent next to yours and look hungry? That sounds yummy, and far more exciting than my usual campsite offerings!0
