  • I just went to samknows.com - he doesn't know much as far as my exchange is concerned. All results came back with 'not available' or 'data being updated'.

This has not changed since I last looked a couple of months back.

    Hi,
Can anyone tell me what Adsl Max is, I thought my maximum speed was 1Mb but when I do an availability check it says that I may also be capable of up to 3Mb using Adsl Max. Is this available at certain Isp's only, do I need another modem etc.

    Hi
BT regraded all their exchanges in March, up to possible speeds of 8mb, now yours has obviously been upgraded and you now should be able to get a speed of up to 3mb.
I would go to your isp website and see what they are saying about it, ie. are they going to upgrade you automatically or do you have to ask them to do it. Most isp are not charging you any extra for this, but again you'll have to check.
What modem have you got? I believe most of the newer ones will take this speed, but again check it out.

    Hope this helps

    Redmikee,
ADSL Max is a new technology being deployed by BT. The idea is that they give you download speeds as fast as your telephone line will support (up to 8 Megabits per second). Instead of being charged for how fast your access is, you will be charged for the amount of data used instead, although most ISP's will include a generous allowance in your monthly bill (Zen give me 20Gigabytes for a £24.99 monthly fee and then £1 per Gigabyte thereafter). This is to allow people like the BBC to start offering video on demand type services, or broadcasting existing channels across the internet which require faster internet connections than have previously been available. However, several factors can affect how fast the speed of your broadband internet access is, including how far away from the telephone exchange you are (the further away the lower your speed will be) the amount of electronic noise or interference on your phone line, the age of the phone line, etc.

There is more detailed information here: http://www.farina1.com/bookmark/000004/2005/02/27/00020260.HTM

    I hope this helps,
    Stephen
  • With a view to checking whether on the right level I read all the bumpf onthe web site about their charging. They actually say "they", in true big brother style, will keep a check on your usage for you and won't tell you what it is unless you go over your option level. (There are 4 levels £17.99 upto £29.99 and 2GB to 40 GB). That means of course, that if you consistently use less they still won't tell you and so prevent you downgrading to a cheaper level and saving money.
I find the Bt Internet site difficult to get any response from, the contact page is often down but will see if they respond this time.

Hi, thanks for your replies about this, I am with Demon (looking to change) and they say they will give downloads of up to 2mb. I will investigate further after work.

I moved from plusnet 2MB to bulldog a couple of months ago. Plusnet were moaning about by usage. With bulldog I now get connected at 7.3Mbs and unlimited p2p usage, it's great for under £10 quid a month. I'd say if your exchange has been unbundled I'd fully recommend bulldog.Perfect switchover aswell.
