Hi, I'm in the same situation. I went on a 2 week New Deal course I did the full 2 weeks and absolutely hated it, I felt like a child. The people that were in my group all seemed like drug addicts

Well said its disgusting everybody is lumped together regardless of age, class, background, you have to sit with people you have nothing in common with. They might smell, they might be on drugs but what does anyone care there. You must stay or you'll lose your benefit if that isnt bullying what is?

A woman can be put in a group with all men who swear and look at !!!!!! on their phones. Nobody wants to be there. Everyone moans or tries to scive off or using the computer to surf the internet and its not jobseeking.

Its time the Mp's visited these New Deal schemes I wonder how long they would last:cool:

    Exactly! :T

I am not saying New Deal is perfect but it still enables long-term unemployed to get much-needed work experience and that in my book is preferable to doing nothing.

It's not slave labour, it is FREE work experience. And it does not have to be charity shops (although why that is a problem for people I have no idea).

Working experience and gaining skills such as punctuality, politeness and professionalism can be gained in any job and then transferred when you eventually get a job of your choosing.

I don't need training in punctuality, politeness and professionalism...I already have those skills.

I have not been on a course but my son and many people I know have.

It is good work experience because you have to be up and around and get to somewhere at a set time and carry out tasks that have been set. This is good experience for the workplace where you will have to do the same. Its about puctuality, priority and deadlines.

There is nothing wrong with working in a charity shop, it is all good experience for any other job.

And also surely it's better than NOT going on a course?

So you are saying that the unemployed don't know how to be up and about ? or to carry out tasks and meet deadlines?? It could be any shop, not just a Charity one.

I think it's more a case that some don't and for others after a while unemployed without routine it is difficult to get back into one. Is far easier and more efficient (and would cause less verbal abuse etc etc) to send everyone on the course instead of judging individuals- and not sure how they can make the judgement on who is and is not capable of such things
  • If you have been unemployed for some time you often have 'rusty' skills, even if you had them before you may be out of practice or lost your confidence. It's a good idea to help gain/retain them.

Simple question then: what sort of job do you WANT to do? and what sort of job WOULD you do?

A year is a long time to be signing on, if it was me I'd be jumping through hoops to get a job, including taking work at a charity shop to broaden my skills.

I totally agree with you. At least by doing charity shop work you have some skills to put on your CV instead of a big blank.

  • Hi, if you make a claim within 13 weeks of your last one, you WILL be referred back to New Deal to continue where you left off ie to complete the "balance of time" on your 13 week course. If you stay off JSA for over 13 weeks, you will not need to return to New Deal. HTH

Well an update, i rang this morning, checked with my local jobcentre first, they def said a new claim is after 12weeks, then i did a new claim, but the man said it was a new claim but also under a rapid re claim aswell?? Which confused me a bit, but i got a interview at 9am tomoz Argh:eek: WAY TO EARLY!!! So hopefully i can sort it down that end with that confusion, but hopefully il sign back on as normal and not go back on new deal :j

But when you get a job, you'd probably be at work at that time ;) (unless you work a 2.30pm to 10pm job like me)

Haha it killed me this morning, but was worth it, all worked out  So least i dont have to worry about being stuck on some pointless 'course' even the job centre says its rubbish, so im not alone!
Ah see in my 1st job, i did a 2pm start, lasted 2months, before i changed it to 9am start, couldnt do evenings, was not nice, rather get up early in the morning then do that :p

I must admit it's nice to have an evening (day off work) to relax and eat with family instead of antisocially lol
