Yep, I like a quiet life at home, with the *option* of having some fun - but the choice is really important to me.
I'm pleased with what I've done today - did a bit of paid work, and I felt a bit restless, so I've been mucking about with old phone wiring, pulling it out of those little clamps that get stuck on skirting boards and then painted over, I got rid of two lots, it was brilliant. Also got rid of lots of old paperwork related to old mystery shops, *and* started to chip away at old sealant between the bath and the wall (tho thats the job I should've been doing the whole time, oops) I feel like I'm starting to get back on top of my house again. Its nice. Its true what radish is saying too - just one thing a day, and you can really get to grips with things.2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
What is a charging order please?
Have been doing some research but am confused.
If my debt is unsecured but has equity can I still lose it if I can't pay this debt off.Debt at LBM £60k (July 09) Jan14 £5k Feb14 £4615

Partly posting this to bump.
I don't really know what a charging order is, hettiecaro, but I think its where if you haven't paid an unsecured debt, they can put a charging order and it becomes secured. I don't *think* you can lose your house over it in the same way that your mortgage lender can make you sell, but I really don't know the ins and outs of it.2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -

Hi. I know pretty much what Karmacat said. As far as I know it is one method of creditors getting there money back like sending the bailiffs, or taking money from your wages, or making you bankrupt etc.
Some co.'s use it as security - ie if you do not stick to an agreed plan then they know that when you sell your hosue they will get their money back.
It is very unusual for a creditor to make you sell your house (as far as I know) but it does happen on occassion - I think it depends on how much you owe and how much your house is worth etc. but it is rare.
Anyway - is this just something you read about somewhere or has a creditor threatened you with this or is someone actually trying to get one - note there is abig difference between threatening 'oh we could do this or this, etc' and actually doing it.
Anyway if you post the circumstances more specifically hopefully someone will be able to advise you better.

Edit: After a quick check on NationalDebtline I found a factsheeet on charging orders which might help you:

Suggest you post a question on the charging order on the main DFW board as a separate post - there will be lots of people there who can help.
Pretty sure you can't be made to sell your home for an unsecured debt - I think they put the order on to ensure they get paid first if you sell your home. But there are loads of friendly experts out there who can tell you for sure.0 -
Thanks all.
I'm not being threatened with a charging order - but if I am to face this situation I need all the facts I can get. I will read the fact sheet and if still confused (more than likely) - I will post question where suggested.
Not a good day today - head all over the place.

Hi there hettiecarro
I haven't had a chance to read the whole thread, so forgive me if you have already taken any action on these SOA, or if you have already had advice! But I didn't want to leave without replying with some hopefully helpful information!
Some thoughts on your SOA:hettiecarro wrote: »Hi all
Monthly Expense Details
Electricity............................. 50 Go to www.moneysupermarket.com and compare cheaper prices. For two of you you should be able to get it down to £30. Before you do, join QUIDCO (www.quidco.com) and get some cashback when you do change supplier. (Quidco is a site where if you click through THEIR link rather than going straight to the website itself, the company will pay you free cash for doing it!)
Gas..................................... 60 Go to www.moneysupermarket.com and compare cheaper prices. For two of you you should be able to get it down to £30. Water rates............................. 50 Again, this sounds high to me. Do you have a water meter? Ask your water company to install one so you're only charged what you use. Silly little things like washing up with half a sink of water instead of a full one, and saving up your clothes until you have a full washing load really, really help.
Telephone (land line)................... 30
Mobile phone............................ 8.50
Satellite/Cable TV...................... 30
This is nearly £70 for what you could get for one service. Maybe ignore the mobile phone as it's so little, but the telephone landline and cable you could get for £20 in total. Again, go to www.moneysupermarket.com to compare where you could get the best deal, and then when you know who you want to change to, use Quidco and get some money back from the supplier! If you don't HAVE to have Cable (and no-one does!), you can buy a freeview box for £10-£15 as a one off, and have freeview and landline for £12 a month (with BT).
Groceries etc. ......................... 200
You can certainly get this down - hop over to Moneysaving Old Style for some tips and a grocery challenge. It's actually all quite fun once you're into it!!
Car Insurance........................... 36
Again - www.moneysupermarket.com to get the best price, and use Quidco to change and get some cashback.
Again, sorry if you've already addressed these, or other people have picked up on them...I didn't get the chance to read the whole thread at work, and didn't want to leave without replying.Suggest you post a question on the charging order on the main DFW board as a separate post - there will be lots of people there who can help.

A charging order is when a company place a charge over your house. This means that when you sell it, if you haven't paid them back, they will own that proportion of your house. It can therefore make a house difficult to sell on, as a potential buyer needs reassurance that they will own the whole house - ie, that the creditor is paid back and owns nothing!
I hope this helps you a little, sorry for any repetition! YOu may find - as many do - that once you get into this moneysaving lark it can actually be quite a fun challenge to have!
And one other thing - you made a comment about it all being rather humiliating. Please don't feel like that. There is nothing humiliating about realising you have an issue, being proactive in sorting it out and making new friends in the process. We all make mistakes and we all learn. You're now building your future, and you're starting off in the best way possible. Nothing humiliating about that in the slightest.
Best wishes, and keep posting to let us know how you're getting on.
Cheers
