His sister is Munin - they're named after Odin's two black ravens - means thought and memory apparently in very very old Norse I guess

Well it's still up in the air... his calcium levels were high and one of his liver enzymes were high. His red count was a little low but within acceptable parameters, white cells within normal too.
So to rule out it being a one off high count of calcium he had a second set of bloods taken last night at 8pm and the vet ran the test there and then. It was high again...
Basically the body regulates calcium very very tightly and even a slight rise out of norm is a cause for concern. It can be a few things: cancer (obviously this wouldn't be good, but she did an x-ray straight away with the vet nurses help and we couldn't see any signs of cancerous lumps or obvious abnormalities in his organs or bones - it could still be a bone cancer or a cancer in the early stages etc), it could be a problem with his parathyroid gland, either a benign tumor on it or it could have gone a bit haywire - if it's this then it can be removed although potentially a risky op and not one any of the 12 vets at the surgery have done before so we may get referred if that is the case), it could be a plant he's eaten (there are 3 in particular, one of which i feel is a possible), he could have eaten a mouse that had scoffed some poison (this one I feel is a high likelyhood, both mine are mousers...) or it could be idiosyncratic... ie no particular medical reason for it that can be determined. This is diagnosed when everything else has been ruled out.
Next step is a special blood test they have to order the kit in for. The blood has to be taken first thing, frozen immediately and shipped forzen to be tested same day. That would rule out the parathyroid and thyroid as cause... then it would be a case of testing for chemicals that cancers leave in the blood... with that ruled out possibly more x-rays and testing for poisons and eventually we may be landed with idiosyncratic as a diagnosis. This is obviously best case scenario. All we'd do then is treat the symptom - bring his calcium levels down and monitor him
So... still in unknown territory I'm afraid... He's however unperturbed and thinks life is grand - mum keeps giving him pouches to fatten him up :rotfl:DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

Well he went in today for his big test - I'd noticed he has perked up in the last few days and I was sure he'd put a bit of weight on... so when we got there I spoke to my mate and got her to weigh him again (porker has put on 200gr since a week ago!) and she checked his eyes and they are now nice and pink and not white as a ghost... So we tested his calcium levels again and they have dropped! They're still high, but not as high as they were. After chatting we decided to run the big test anyway - at least it will have been ruled out if his calcium levels shoot up again!
If we get the all clear on this she is pretty happy to put it down as poisoning (well not happy but ya know what I mean!) - most likely from eating a poisoned mouse or rat...
Fingers crossed that he's over the worst and that it's not cancer after all - but just that the lazy sod saw a tasty mouse and decided to scoff it instead of catching a nice fresh one! Smuck!

Aww you must be relieved, seems like he'll be ok & i'm pleased to hear it looks as though he's doing much better! Hopefully he'll sail through this test & think twice before dining on mice again! Thanks for updating & let us know when the results are back!0
