Last Minute Bids

I disagree (in theory you are correct) but the majority of buyers are nibblers and in turn do not bid their maximum unless forced to do so. So if you bid your max early you have a higher chance of losing it. I find I can beat nibblers and normally get it a bit cheaper than my max by bidding hard and last.
Point 1 also needs to be treated with a touch of caution sometimes. I will sometimes put in a bid early (assuming no other bids) to try and stop panicking sellers pulling auctions before the last 12 hours.0
