I had my car sprayed by a gritter on the way home so decided to look at the five day forecast on http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/. It's going to be freezing here in Yorkshire for the next five days so I decided to wait til next week to get a new blueberry bush as i'd like to put it straight outside.
I'm going to sow some tumbling tomatoes (free with grow your own mag)and chillis on Sunday.
I just hope the plants i've got outside are hardy enough for the cold weather.
Bring on Spring!! and the summer!0 -

MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. Hi,
I was thinking about trying to grow some of my own veg, this year but have,nt got a clue where to start.
I will have to grow them in a pot or something as no room in the garden this year (if i,m successful and get confident i,ll maybe dig some flowers out for next years crop!!), what size pot would i need--or can you grow in the black plastic bags, what type of compost etc.
ANY advice would be grateful as i really am clueless, the type of things i would like to have a go at are. carrots. turnips. potatoes, sprouts etc.
Thanks in advance

I have been reading other posts but they all seem too advanced for me
I have never tried gardening before (other than cress seeds in an eggshell) and dont have any tools or pots but with a need to save money on food bills I am willing to give it a go.
Please can someone recomend a book or magazine or even suggest maybe where I can get advice on how to get started.
Put simply I want to grow some easy veg, tomatoes and herbs and simple fruit in pots on my patio is this possible?
Many thanksFailure is only someone elses judgement.
Without change there would be no butterflies.
If its important to you, you'll find a way - if not, you'll find an excuse ! ~ Easy to say when you take money out of the equation!

Yes it's possible. Have you read the container gardening thread on here?
It really isn't rocket science. You will need seeds or young plants from the garden centre when it warms up a bit. Compost for some large pots for on the patio. And a watering can.
Decide what you want to grow and then ask away...0 -
I can't recommed a book just an idea for making your own pots from Newspaper instead of buying pots or trays. using this web page http://www.feesworld.com/how2make/paperpots/index.html
I ahve made about 40 today using the free papers you get at the entrances of supermarket. i plan to grow tomato & sweet pepper plants in them. I have also manged to get some old mail sacks form our post room at work for potatos, carrots and onions. i'm trying to get as much for free as possible, seed were 23p from Lidl and seed potatos from B&Q from £5.
Good luck with yours

Hello all
My first post on this board but I read all the time and have learned loads.
I make a newspaper pot originally posted by Vibrant in the following post:
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1415075&highlight=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.geocities.com%2Fnewspaperpots%2F
(I'm working up the nerve to ask a question but I'm afraid it may be silly. It has something to do with making some sort of homemade seed propagator and filled hot water bottles. I'll have to learn to start a thread to ask.)
Thanks again to all of you for being so generous with your wisdom and most importantly, your experience.

You can use old fruit containers i.e. peach, blueberry, yoghurt pots and margarine tubs as propagators. Then cover them in cling film and leave in a warm light place inside the house if you haven't got an electric propagator.
The problem you would have trying to construct a progagator to use hot water bottles is keeping the temperature constant. Electric progagators do that for you.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

Thanks for that, olly. Makes sense about a consistent temperature. I'll go for the windowsill placement. Much appreciated!0
