I belive it is best not to transplant carrot seedlings, moving them will release a scent that attracts the carrot fly, plus disturbing the root can encourage the roots to not grow straight and can fork which makes peeling annoying.
Better to sow direct in non stony ground that has not been freshly fertilised and carefully remove and eat any thinnings without disturbing the leaves that give off the scent.

I sowed some Autumn King 2 in containers at the beginning of the month, and they are doing very well.

Hi. sorry, missed this as our computer went bust and then we went on holiday.
Carrots fork for a few reasons.
stones are one, also the soil being too rich in manure, or they were transplanted as seedlings.
I am having excellent results this year - i didn't add any organic matter, dug really deep [a new bed, so starting with just rotavated soil that had grass on it], removed as many stones as possible, used raised beds, sowed on a root day [lunar calendar] with coriander and kept trimming it back to the same height as the carrot tops, kept scrupulously weed free [they really don't like competition], and have had 6-8 inch carrots in 13 weeks flat. Really thick ones as well. ZERO carrot fly. The only problem has been that the stalks break off when pulling due to them being so big - that's a problem that i can definitely live with!!!0 -
just moved and we have a lovly garden, and i would like to have a go at growing things in pots, am a complete novice but i think this may not be the best time of year but what i cant do now i can begin to plan.
i dont have a green house so i will need things that can be sown outside or plants that i can buy (i.e next year we will buy some tomato plants & some strawberry plants, would also like to try salad leaves etc.)
in my local shop they had little tubs of parsley and chives reduced to an amazing 20p each!! so they are in a pot on the patio.
i need things that are easy to grow as i am a total novice!
(next year i also aim to use seeds that can be sown outside for my pots & baskets rather than buying trays of flowers from the diy shops, which will not only save me money but will also mean that hopefully i will end up with pots & pots & pots of lovly colours as i will be able to have a bigger quantity & variety)
thanks in advance.0 -
tomatoes, even carrots can be grown in pots. When you go to buy the seed, look for the varieties that say they can grow in containers.0

I've never grown anything ever.So this year me and the three year decided to grow tomatoes. I bought three plants for 30p each and put them in a hanging basket and tonight ive just picked another bowl full(4th bowl so far). I'm so pleased i know its not much but ive got the confidence now to try more next year, And the toms look much better than flower in the basket.March 2014 Grocery challenge £250.000
