I grew mine last year in a two inch seed tray, and they seemed fine. They didnt achieve an enormous size, but they were VERY strong!0

Yes you can grow them in pots, in fact you can put a pinch in a plastic cup or pot every couple of weeks, as they grow bigger plant the whole clump into the garden then when they are ready pull the whole clump. Easy peasy.you can't take it with you...0

Hello all
I was hoping some knowledgeable peeps on here may be able to advise me. I want to try growing some veg in pots. Nothing extravagant, at the minute I grow some herbs and I've grown lettuce in the past but that's the limit of my expertise. I guess firstly I need to know have I left it too late to plant from seed? I was thinking it'd be nice to have some fresh salad veggies I could pick as needed so I'm thinking things like lettuce, tomatoes, but would appreciate any suggestions of any other good (and easy) things to try.
Also I don't have a garden center in easy traveling distance (no car). Can anyone suggest good and reasonably priced websites I can order either seeds, or if it's too late for them, small plants from?
Thanks!0 -
I'm not very knowledgeable as this is my first year of growing veg but I hope it helps.
I don't know timings of when things should be planted so you will have to wait for someone more knowledgeable to come along but I am growing things in tubs as I only have a border in my garden and have other plans for it. The things I am growing are onions, carrots, parsnips, swedes and potatoes. I am hoping that these will come out alright although they all seem to be growing quite nicely. Also the good thing with growing my carrots in a pot is that I can put the pot on my old freestanding greehouse so that it is high enough not to get attacked by carrot fly.
I bought my seeds from Wilkinsons. Is there nowhere near to you apart from a garden centre that you can get seeds from?
I hope this helps you a little.Did owe £9,951.96

I'm not sure whether it is too late to plant tomatoes from seed this year, hopefully someone else will be able to answer that, but radish, cut and come again lettuce, rocket, spinach and spring onions are things that I'm growing at the moment that come up quite quickly.
If you do want to do salad veg just make sure that you don't plant too many at once or you'll end up giving them away. I'm planting a new batch every couple of weeks to make sure I have a continuous supply.
Keep your eye out for tomato plants at car boot sales, I've seen quite a few at my local one. This site is good for swapping seeds if there's anything in particular that you're looking for: Garden Swap Shop

I wouldn't worry about garden centres for these items, especially if not easy.
Post is not cheap for smaller items due to P & P costs
Any markets handy? Tomato plants are readily availble now, or have a look in local gardens, stalls, jumbles etc for them [about 25p each round here]
Seeds, any supermarkets / Lidls / Woolworths / Wilkinsons nearby? Plenty in there, some reduced now to clear them outEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -
Look on Freecycle. There are lots of seedlings and saved seed going spare at the moment.0

Thanks for the replies!
Our town doesn't have a very useful market for plants unfortunately, we just have a small indoor one. We do however have a Wilko's and Woolies so I think a trip there is in order to see what they've got by way of seeds. I think I should at least be able to pick up some lettuce seeds.
I was quizzing my mum about this today too as she used to have an allotment and she thinks courgettes might grow quite well in a pot so I'll try some experiments with them too. has anyone had any success with these? I'd like to try get hold of some tomatoes and strawberries if I can find any plants about, does anyone have any other suggestions that would be good for containers?0 -
I did courgette in a pot last year [my first time growing one in a pot] and it worked fine
Do try and make sure you get a bush type and not a trailing one [most are bush these days] or you will have it all over the garden :rotfl:
You would find it advisable to hand pollinate the flowers to ensure a good crop, easy enough with only a few in potsEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -
