My long haired cat hates being groomed by me, I used to have to wear skiing gloves, she would rip my hands apart otherwise - as soon as the comb was out, so were her claws! My friend recommended a grooming company and they come about once every 3 months (more in the winter when her fur is thicker) and she behaves impeccably for them. Its £18 a time, but its worth it. In between, I do cut her matted bits with scissors, but only the bits that are easy - I leave anything else for the professionals!

Sorry to hear about so many poorly cats....

So sorry to hear about your cat, I have an 8yr old & thought she'd die on the 11th, so I understand how you feel. My cat also ended up with matter fur due to something she rolled in & I tried to cut it out also, accidents happen, you were only trying to help her & i'm sure you're upset enough, you both have my sympathy x

What about a grooming glove?JML do one. Also I have cut both my guinea pigs and my dogs toes when clipping their nails.

Just incase anyone didnt know...you can but antiseptic powder from pet stores that could to avoid a trip to the vets, although if you have drew blood I would go to the vets anyway. It might help if cats have minor injuries.

I cannot get it out of my mind. I knew Monday morning what was going to happen. It was horrendous knowing what the outcome was going to be. I knew it was unfair to keep her anylonger. When she was first diagnosed the vet suggested it to me then but I couldn't. She was "not in pain, not distressed or depressed, just confused like a little old lady." The vets words, not mine. I feel sick everytime I think about what happened Monday. With it being the Easter hols my 6 yr old son was off school and with us. My husband took him from the room so I stayed with her myself. I was there the day she was born and also there at the end. My other cat has chronic rhynitis which requires antibiotics every few weeks. He is 15 and has always been with Whisky who was 17. He is pining for her, mostly of an evening when they would always share a bed. He refuses to go in the bed at all now and sleeps on the top of the stairs.

I know exactly how you feel, but have had about 2 years to come to terms with my decision regarding when to end it. I decided to end it before she got distressed. It's nicer for them to go with dignity and not fear and that is what she will have had. It's never easy, but as her owner she gave you responsibility to make the hardest decision ever and I am sure that you made it at the right time. It does get a little easier with time. I no longer wake up and fall asleep thinking about my cat and having 4 others helps to ease the pain. For me I got another cat quickly, but that doesn't work for everyone. Is it something you have considered? Would it help ease things for your other cat?

I already have an elderly cat who has chronic rhynitis and requires treatment at the vets almost on a monthly basis, he is 16 later this summer. Along with Monty I have Tammy, a cross collie, she is 10 yrs old. I could not bare to have another animal and go through what I did last Monday. I love cats & dogs but it is heartbreaking when they pass away. In some ways I feel it would be like saying Whisky did not mean much if I can go out and get another cat.

Everything I do seems to upset me. I am constantly thinking "this time last week, or the last time I did this". The only way I have slept is because I have taken a sleeping pill. She meant the world to me, I had her since I was 14 and was there when she was born. I can see her fur on the garden fence from where she used to squeeze between the slats etc...

Isn't she beautiful. I took this picture with my mobile phone as she slept in my arms before she got ill. She would have been 18 in November this year.

Whisky was ginger and white with the cutest pink nose. Monty is mostly ginger with a white chest and feet. He was knocking on deaths door last year and the vet suggested it was time to put him to sleep. I refused because I just knew he would come through - and he did. He was matted and I did the same as the OP, I somehow, managed to clip his skin while trying to clip off a matt from his back. He was so ill at the time he didn't even flinch and I was racked with guilt. I bought the antiseptic powder then and sprinkled it on the wound until it healed. He has the most gorgeous, thickest coat now and is a picture of health even though he has chronic rhynitis. Shame he never learnt how to meow *lol*.
