It's manners - white is always the colour of the bride, sometimes she might not be wearing a traditional dress (my step mum wore a white suit). So other guests should avoid wearing the "bridal" colour. (Of course, not every bride is wearing white, but at a wedding it is still a bridal colour and should be avoided)

The same goes for an all black ensemble - as black is traditionally worn at funerals, you should avoid setting a somber mood with your outfit :)

ermmm !!!!!! 5 of my bridesmaids is in black and they dont look like a funeral

Listen, I really didn't mean to offend - I was just giving my opinion of general etiquette on what you wear to weddings. No black doesn't look funereal if it coordinates in with the colour scheme. I personally think that with weddings that incorporate black (black and white, black and pink etc) you CAN'T go wrong, I haven't seen one looking tacky - they all look elegant and glamorous.

That being said, if you don't know someone's colour scheme, and you can't garner it from their invitations, it would be poor form to turn up in all black. Why do you think that in comedy TV and Films all really awful MILs turn up to weddings in a black outfit?

Fashions are changing and wearing black to a wedding is thought of differently now by most people. But to *some* traditionalists, it's still a no no.

I'm sure your BMs look beautiful, and your wedding will be lovely. Didn't mean to offend! :)

OOOPPS looks like I should be more worried that mil to be's dress is black. I thought it was just cos she managed to find a nice dress (which hasn't been easy due to her odd shape think size 16 top half size 28 bottom).
    Booo!!!

    :)

I wear black to weddings - all day and evening do's. The majority of my wardrobe is black (I am not a goth or owt btw!), but I feel more comfortable in black, and have some lovely black outfits. I always make sure I look smart, and wear nice accessories etc.
At my wedding I could not care less if anyone wears black - I would rather people wore a colour they were comfortable with, than feel that they had to go out and buy something else, and spend the day feeling self-concious and unhappy.
My bridesmaids are going to be in black dresses too, and they are delighted!

I don't have a mother of the grrom to worry about and I know Mum won't wear white/ivory or black! She's fascinated by fascinators though :rotfl: She's always been one to wear a hat to a wedding but fancies something special for her only daughter!

I'm fairly laid back at the mo but we'll see when I get deeper into plans!

The worst at the mo is my H2B promising his best friend (and ex-girlfriend) that she could be best woman! I've already put my foot down there and said no but now he wants her to be maid of honour/chief bridesmaid! Which means my best friend gets relegated (if I was going to have adult bridesmaids at all - which I didn't REALLY want!) Grrrrr

god, skint_catt no way would she even be at my wedding never mind part of the bridal party. i suppose it depends on how long ago they split and if you like her. anyway your bridesmaids etc are your choice, if htb wants her as part of your wedding party then tell him to make her best woman or an usher.

It may be that she is trying to compliment your colour scheme, I came across some really traditional wedding planner stuff and one of the earliest things to do was to notify both mums so that they can co ordinate their outfit with your scheme - this seems more likely as she has managed to match both colours

I think your main problem now may be getting Your mum to match as is may look a bit odd to have her in a completly different colour now that your oh mum is matching
