We have a bed from Ikea and it's fine - it's sturdy, comfortable and it's lasted being dismantled for half a dozen house moves and it still goes back together perfectly. The good thing we've found is that you buy the bits separately (bedframe, slats, mattress etc) so you can choose where to economise.

The only downside to Ikea beds is that they're odd sizes so you do have to buy bedding etc from Ikea too, as ordinary flat sheets/duvets/duvet covers tend not to fit. However, we have the biggest bed they do (superking) so it might not be so much of an issue if you're going for something smaller (double/king).

I think I'm going to go with a bed and sofa I've seen from Tesco. Does anyone know where I'd go to find vouchers for them?
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

Have you considered second hand? Some people sell virtually new sofas.

You might be able to get a high quality sofa at a bargain price on Ebay, local papers etc. Collection may be a problem if you don't have a suitable vehicle.

Do you have any independent furniture retailers in your area?

We've got two leather Ikea sofas which we've had for about five years now. One is looking decidedly tatty on one of the arms & one cushion, but I blame the dogs for that!

Apart from that, they are wearing very well, are very comfy, sturdy & we're very pleased with them.

I've thought about a second hand one, but you can only get the grant once and I don't want to risk it falling apart within a few months and ending up back at square one.

With ebay and freecycle it'd cost so much to deliver that I might as well go to a charity shop.

I've seen one I like at Tesco direct, and a bed. Both together will only cost me £50 more than the grant. I don't want to spend less than the grant because that would seem ungrateful, and I don't want them to come back and ask for proof that I spent it all!

Plus I can get clubcard points which are worth 4x as much in vouchers for the open university, which will save me even more money.

    Hi Ames,

I've got a Tesco sofa and it's fab! It is very much like the York one mentioned above but fabric.

My last one was an Ikea one. It was intended to be a stopgap for a year or so, but in the end I had it for five years. Then I offered it on Freecycle, and a while back got an email from the person that had it saying it is still going strong a year later! Unfortunately they have discontinued the range (stupid Ikea!).
    Gone ... or have I?
