Boot up with the
WinXP CD and get to the Repair Console(follow the instructions on the screen). Follow
these steps once you get to the Repair Console:
1) Type FIXBOOT, enter & answer (Y)es to overwrite/create mbr.
2) Type CD \ press enter to get to the root drive.
Type and enter these commands one at a time:
3) ATTRIB -H -S -R NTLDR
4) ATTRIB -H -S -R NTDETECT.COM
X is the letter of your CD-Rom drive
5) COPY X:\I386\NTLDR C:\
6) COPY X:\I386\NTDETECT.COM C:\
Type EXIT to leave the Repair Console and reboot. These steps should repair the mbr
and detect all O/S on the computer.Ex forum ambassador

UPDATE[/U
Browntoa,
Tried your suggestion re trying to boot from Windows XP disc, unfortunately it cant see the drive. Looks like it can only see the floppy drive.
Thanks for your help anyway, looks like we may have to replace the hard drive and start again.
Cheers,

do you mean it can't see the CD drive, or the hard disk? If the former, change the boot order in the bios, put the CD drive above the hard disk
on some machines, pressing F12 at boot give you a boot menu to boot from CDEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Message says cannot find drive C. Sorry i didn't make it clearer, but am relaying info from hubby.
Will try your suggestion of pressing F12 at start up.
Cheers
