i love the 'summer holidays' bit.
i get the same at work where people seem to expect me to know they are not going to be home for X weeks, so of course should know not to return any of their items.
so basically no business should be done between June to August?
then of course December as its the mad xmas month.
    then Easter? Ramadan?.........

    All,
I have just tried to get a refund of 10 months worth of membership/ breakdown cover from the RAC only to be told that they don't do refunds outside the cooling off period.

I was renewing my insurance and they refused to negotiate a better deal so I hit the comparison website and saved £80 with the AA.

I have a couple of questions:
Is this legal to be able to refuse a refund for cancelled services?

Has anyone in this position got there money back?

I just want to say don't use the RAC they were not helpful at all, I had to wait 20 minutes to be told the news above and was blamed for not reading the terms and conditions. This is a major thing I would have thought would have been highlighted.
THIS IS A RIP OFF DON'T USE THE RAC!!

I agree that RAC is a total rip off!
I have used this service for 7 years at around £170 a time, now i have no car as engine blew up, and no one to transfer the cover to, RAC says i can have no refund of 11 months of cover because i did not cancel my policy 14 days after the policy started. How was i to know that my car would blow up a few days after? It is totally wrong and a rip off.

A large percentage of the costs associated with this type of membership to the business providing them are administration.
Almost all of the administration is done within the first few days of setting up a customers account.
A 14 day cooling off period seems perfectly fair, if your circumstances change then I can see why you should feel a bit disgruntled, but that's hardly the providers fault.

It all boils down to who should pay when things change/the customer changes their mind/ a mistake is made:

If it's outside of any cooling off period, clearly within the T&Cs (and I don't sympathise with those who don't read T&Cs when the 'product' can be an expensive service/item -most don't take THAT long to check through and since most companies have almost identical Terms when providing the same/similar products you have to accept them anyway) and not the companies fault then why should they (and inevitably the vast majority of customers who DO stick to their terms) foot the bill?

Why is it that every time we seem to see the accusation of 'rip-off' etc it's merely someone who feels hard done by that simply HAS to find someone else to blame?
Why not just accept it's a case of bad luck and move on?
The money would have been better spent on a warranty policy, but that's just the luck of the draw! Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Rac at £170 a year is very dear though -Breakdown and roadside come in around £90: I would always haggle to get a better deal every year too as they are always asking too much on renewal (certainly more than a new customer every time) so it's worth swapping between AA and RAC etc every year as a matter of course.
Unless specifically stated all posts by me are my own considered opinion.

It's in the T&C's that it's an annual policy.

You should be able to transfer cover to any new car you buy or if it's personal cover then it will cover you if you are a passenger a vehicle.

Some shops won't let you return things because you don't need an item so why should the RAC predict with a crystal ball whether your car will blow up?
