when I had my first interview, two advisor were trying to pick who would see who (two of us waiting) they were laughing and throwing our slips around.

Saying that the guy I've signed on with twice is excellent, asks me questions, does a job search etc.

I know there is a need for security (going by the trash I see hanging around) but there just seems too many at times.

i have heard staff actually swearing and !!!!!ing about people who are waiting to sign on - is that right? You might be one of the rare ones who care but trust me, in my local job centre, they all have a massive attitude problem. i could give you a hundred examples.

Some offices are better than other i will agree with you on that, I have worked in 3 now and yes staff can behave like that.
My mom works not far from where I work and as she was on her lunch break and waiting outside to meet me she had the joy of listeneing to 2 lads calling a jobcentre worker all the names under the sun how they were going to do her car all because she had referred them to a mandantory new deal course, person no3 turns up after the plesantries person 3 says better go the b***h will be waiting for me, no2 asks who they are going to see low and behold my name is mentioned now can that be right:mad:

Any employer would take on the person who can do the job in 2/3 of the time. You would be stupid not to. But why do you assume that because someone is older they can't work as efficiently? It's people like you that make a requirement for discrimination laws.

If it's of any consolation I took on a 60 year old adminstrator in a previous job.

Administrator yes. who wouldnt or couldnt do a hard days graft on a building site. i dont assume, I work in the building trade and see every day how old the 60 years old look and feel, having grafted rain/sun and sleet since they were 15, and administration jb would be a piece of p!ss for them.
Pot and kettle spring to mind - Your first sentence was age discriminatory so it was a bit hypocritical to say the least.

and i might add, i have great respect for the builders i work with, of any age, they work like trojans to enable me to work and get paid in administration

    A few points

    1) there can never be too many security guards, there have been two incidents recently in my area where someone has threatened a drive by and one where someone brought a gun and a knife into the premises. More often than not when someone properly kicks off (at least once a week) it takes two guards to restrain them and the rest are still needed to carry on normal service.

    2) The people who sign you on are not there to find you a job. That's not to say that such help doesn't exist in the jobcentre just that it's not where you think it is. More in-depth help and job-matching services are available. Try asking for a caseload appointment or a one-to-one appointment under the "Day one offer". Here you'll get at last half an hour with an advisor and much more help.

    3) 50% of jobs these days are not advertised. A great way to get your foot in the door is to get a great cv together (get it looked at by a professional-this is something the jobcentre can arrange) and send it out with a covering letter to companies. They are more likely to look through the cvs they already have before paying to advertise their vacancy/fill it through an agency.

There really are jobs out there, and yes there are many more people applying these days, butthere are ways to set yourself above the others and increase your likelihood of being chosen.

    Hope this helps :)

i have the same respect for cleaners and dustbinment.
i saw the chaos in london when the dbm went on strike.
Just a thought, a cheif executive is ill and off work for a month.
A cleaner is is ill and off work for a month.

Who would be missed first and most?

They are at least meant to look at what I've done and ask if I've done any work. Otherwise whats the point & how can they then send out letters saying they don't think you've done enough & they will be checking up.

I had no objection to the security guards, I just thought they could be a bit more polite, in my case I thought they might weigh up the difference between a middle aged lady and a chav. My mistake. If I ever have the misfortune to be unemployed again I will not apply for jobseekers. I know I would be entitled, but do not want to go through that again.

I was actually glad the security were there, 'cos I was frightened. Just didn't like being told off for being early and laughed at.

I also understand that the people who work there are not out to find you a job, that was my responsibily.
I can see it is difficult place to work in, for security and the staff there, all I wanted was a bit of respect.....as a human being, not a lot to ask for is it?

I went to the job centre with my OH so he could sign on. His time is 9:05am, second time in a row at 9am everyone waiting outside goes inside (door unlocked) this week for the first time I heard one of the gaurds saying 'someone went out and let them in' it's gone 9am doors open at 9am, just before 9am the gaurd at the door always leaves and goes up stairs leaving us all outside wondering what is happening.

Anyways that not the point of this post.

Times goes by, 9:20am comes around, still not signed on, 9:30am the same so my OH goes to find out why and the lady at the desk goes to find out, eventually all she says (across the room) is 'we can't find your card' she then goes onto sort other people out, leaving other people to find it but not letting us know. A guy sits down next to us and asks the gaurd to make sure they will call his name out as they lost his card last time and he just had to sign a bit of paper.
Eventually they realise that they had left a box full of cards in the cubboard and his name gets called out at 10am. We were never actually told it had been found, it would have been nice if they had.
I got !!!!ed off when the lady at the desk starts sorting out her personal life on the phone!!! Wouldn't have been too bad if she'd told us someone else was dealing with us.

Everyimte I signedon everyone was very helpful and pleasant. There was a couple of people in particular who would always take the time to go through what jobs they could find etc etc and the security guards were always friendly- again I think it depends on where you sign on.
I still always hated it and thankfully have now gotten a job- just need to find my card/wallety thing now lol
