  • Suppose giving a mutant breeding failure a fancy name makes it possible for them to make more money out of the poor creatures, rather than having to bother with drowning them...

i have an exotic and she was bought not because of her breed but because i desperately wanted a cat. rspca said no because i lived near a main road even though i said was going to be a house cat. i bought mine because nobody else wanted her as she has a kink in her tail so would be rubbish for breeding apparently. she was neutered within the fortnight :)
shes had various problems with her teeth though as their jaws overap and they eat funny.
i would no way pay £500 for a cat which as said before is a mutant and inbred.
good luck with getting a cat, remember theres alot of pedigree cats in rescue homes if you are that intent on having one :)
forgot to add, mines got short hair but because its fuzzy its an absolute nightmare to keep lump free, a right pain in the backside lol
dread to think how bad the long haired ones are!

I don't post on cat threads cos I don't know much about them but the quoted comment caught my eye.

If you buy any pedigree animal you are buying a "mutant". It has been bred (& inbred) to conform to a standard we set, it is not left to natural selection.

The English Bulldog is a case in point as it bears little resemblance to it's ancestors & the Kennel Club is guilty, IMV, of allowing selective breeding to "improve the breed" at the detriment of the dogs health. The flatter the face, the more it impresses judges & this will continue until until the governing bodies take a step back & realise that they are not actually improving the breed but killing it.

Hip Dysplasia is far too common in large dogs because the congenital defect has been ignored during breeding because the parents were of "good type".

I would be surprised if it is not the same in the cat world... I can't see how a Persian would have evolved naturally.

  • generally, the closer animals are to their wild ancestry the better health wise, as wild animals have evolved o have the best form for purpose, not for aesthetics. So, cats that have similar proportions to a wild cat are likely to be far better suited to purpose than ones with 'extreme' variations - if you google european wild cat you get lots of cats that look like this:
    wildkatze.jpg

(Not a million miles away from the common or garden moggy, who seem to thrive in towns and cities, often without much help from humans).

    - wild felines from around the world have different physical characteristics which are suited to their environments and prey.. however, none have evolved to have flat faces, as this impedes breathing, and a cat which couldnt run and hunt would not live for long.

I meet a bulldog at the park sometimes - he is a young lad, and a dog with a nice character but I feel so sorry for him - he sounds like darth vader, he lumbers along, snorting and blowing and cannot run, and is really quite grotesque, bow legged with red rimmed eyes protruding from their sockets.. quite why people think this is a good way for a dog to be is beyond me, he is to all extents and purposed disabled, and I cannot understand why this poor breed, with such hideous deformity continues to be bred.

I feel the same way about Boxers although I might be in a minority of one here. I do know they have legions of fans ready and willing to shout their corner. I'm not that clued-up about their health defects but I don't care for them purely based on their peculiarly unnatural looks but it doesn't matter really because I'm more of a moggy person

The Persian breed became very popular in Victorian times. The cats are very very very different looking today. They had normal shaped faces but long hair and it was the blue(actually a dark grey colour)version everyone wanted.

The Siamese of today is very different from the original also. Now the breed has to be very thin and long pointy faces. The original Siamese looked like a Burmese in face and body shape back in the 60's.

I have two Burmese who look like the normal moggies, but have brown colour coats and just love people The Burmese have been kept as the same shape and look since day one. Of course the Americas had to breed a long haired version which is not recognised for showing in the UK/Europe.

To be fair I'm not sure a Boxer is a good example, yet!! They are the same basic "design" as all Molosser breeds... big necks, set back nose & undershot bite, all designed to let the dog catch & hang onto whatever while still being able to breath. I agree it's not natural, any dog with a squat nose is manufactured, but the general appearance hasn't changed much for years.

Compare this to the breed I have (Dogue de Bordeaux) where they are already known for having a large head but the trend is to breed for bigger & bigger heads because it wins show points. Trouble is eventually the breed will become so grotesque & un-natural that it will be unable to sustain itself.

Puppy births will have to be by section due to the size of the puppies heads & life expectency will eventually be limited due to genetic defects caused by the "inbreeding" used to create these monsters.

The major reason I gave up breeding them was that I wanted a healthy pup to sell on, not some caricature that purports to be a DDB!

Apologies to the OP for hijacking their post :o
