Yes the tax credit system does pay too much money out and I am sure plenty will agree, but the point is that its abused. Your thinking I won't work full time because I don't need too and thats because of the tax credits.
I work part-time out of choice, as not only do I actually get to pick my son up from school, but also any time I have worked ful time my mental health took a turn for the worse. If you want to know me I am a 27 yr old working single mother with mental health problems and a son who is waiting to be diagnosed with Asperger's. they just have to confirm it. I have been on IS for a total of 6 months my entire life.
With regards to the OP, like someone else has said ask for a breakdown of the debt. I myself can't see this level of debt being accrued over only a few years. Yes you've made a mistake, and hopefully you won't do it again. They have the right to ask for the money back, seek the advice of a debt mangment company who can help you more.0 -

How it reads to me is they probably will get the debt written off as their near bankrupt and they didn't get a prison sentence, so I agree with the poser they appear to have got away with it.No you're not a vegetarian if you eat any animal or fish, so do not insult genuine veggies by calling yourself one!

I'd like to point out first of all you don't know me. My mother was a working single parent when I was growing up, due to her teaching, I wouldn't dream of not working because I couldn't be bothered. I will never believe WTC pays out too much money.

I think its good you go to work and praise you for it, I just wish more people were making the effort.
Although I do agree with a previous poser that people should not need to be encouraged to work, its good to see people making an effort. No you're not a vegetarian if you eat any animal or fish, so do not insult genuine veggies by calling yourself one!

It may be ok for for some of you that are earning good money 20k plus per year but not everyone can get into those jobs others have to take minimum wage/part time so why shouldn't they get help, the government also get money back from the employer in taxes and from the employees in NI and other taxes.
The problem lies with the person claiming the tax by way under estimating what they are going to earn and then are overpaid tax credits, always always over estimate and you'll never need to pay anything back..........
It should not need to encourage people to work, people should want to work and support their family and contribute to the country, not because of benefits but because they have been brought up to work hard.No you're not a vegetarian if you eat any animal or fish, so do not insult genuine veggies by calling yourself one!

I agree, the whole situation of handing out benefits to people with kids is stupid. And I say that as somebody with a two month old baby, I now get £20 a week child benefit + CTC randomly dump money into my account every few weeks (no idea how they work it out). And both mine + my partners income is comfortably over the national average, so really we don't need the money. Scrapping CB + CTC and increasing everybodys tax code so that low earners pay much less tax is the obvious solution, but the labour government wouldn't like low earners to believe they can support themselves.0 -
i totally agree people should need to be encouraged to work they should work because they can, but the benefits system has made it so easy for people NOT to work that a minority have taken this up and have decided not to work, what i was saying is that those who want to work but sometimes can't afford to work because they generally are bettr off on benefits it encourages them back because WTC will top up their wages and the help will still be there, but unfortuently when you get on benefits the jobcentre staff dont make this totally clear and inform you properly of all the help available, its only through sites like this and entitledto.co.uk that you get a full pictureEveryones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0

I could (and I do donate the £2 a month to Cancer Research) but while I'm getting shafted with the 9% graduate tax I'm not going to feel guilty about getting a small proportion of my money back.0
