What happened to helping childless people these days and rewarding people who work hard? That benefit amount is disgraceful at 7.5k per year, you must have been laughing at the rest of us!! GR.

well said this is only of the only true beneficial benefits that actually rewards people for workingEveryones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -

I don't think Catmiaow meant that you should not be entitled. I myself agree with the system, but I do not think people should not be paid so much. At the end of the day most people work hard and just because you have kids doesn't mean you are a cut above single people.
I do think their should be more help for single working people and I dont think people should have to be encouraged to work hard, I was brought up to work hard and what is wrong with that?0 -

Why should anyone be rewarded for going to work to support their own family?
I wish we could go back to the old way of extra tax allowances when children are born. You have to work to benefit, no chance of fraud.0 -

Yeah exactly, I do think the tax credit system is a good thing but the way the system is wrong is unfair, single people get hardly anything and people with kids get a lot. Not being funny but if people want kids, they should work to pay for them and not expect hand outs of 7k or more a year, if you can't cope without the benefits then you should re think having kids in the first place. A fair amount would be half that 7k a year for people with kids.0 -

:T I totally agree.
Scrapping tax credits and utilising tax allowances would be far better and probably cheaper too. There would be few over/underpayments if done directly at source and it would not be open to abuse like the current system is.
It would also mean only those who worked to support their families would qualify which is how it should be. Too many people have children with no means of supporting them, our teen pregnancy rate would drop if the cash stopped and perhaps children born in "throw away" relationships would drop too.
The OP should be made to pay the entire overpayment back and face charges, filling in renewal year and year and knowing childcare wasnt needed as the partner was home is blatant fraud not a mistake.0 -
I dont think its quite as simple as " If people want kids they should work to pay for them and not expect handouts" yes some people do have that attitude but theres also lots of cases where couples have had happy stable relationships, are financially able to have children and decide to do so in good faith only for marriages to break down, finances to be halved and to be left with nothing.
I feel tax credits are good as they encourage you to work not sit at home and claim every benefit going. There arent many options for single parents especially who want to work but have young children and tax credits enables it to be possible.
Of course you have people that abuse the system but that unfortuatley will always be the case0 -

I agree with you about all you have said, why aren't all people as smart as you?!
I wish that OP had been charged with fraud, letting people off this kind of thing encourages it to happen even more.
I also thing people should not be given housing at the drop of a hat just for being pregnant, I have known people who get pregnant on purpose just to get a flat and not work as they know they can live off the huge benefits they will get, its totally out of order.0 -

A previous person posted "Why should people be rewarded for supporting their family?" and I agree.
If families split up, it will still be the same thing as when their together, where the parents work and the kids go to nursery or to relatives, they can decide amongst themselves about maintenance. A lot of people do not bother to tell the truth about a break up, get told to pay benefits back then complain about it.
Yes people abuse the system, but things should be changed to reduce/stop this from happening rather than letting it carry on.0 -
With respect, this conversation should be taken to the discussion board as it will put newbies from posting any genuine queries that they may have. The beenfits board is not here to discuss benefit policy but to help people with their benefit problems/entitlements.0
