    Is your BIW's (?) definitely a Discovery 3?

Also, dont forget that prices bottomed out last year for cars - and 4x4's in particular - and have actually risen since, due to short supply of good used stock.

I did a quick check on autotrader - non franchised dealers seem to be asking £14.5K+ for an 06 one, main dealers £17K+. You would have to be very lucky to pick one up privately for £12K, though i guess its not impossible.

Have you a link to one new at £19K - seems very cheap if its a proper UK car - given its list price is over £30K.

I was thinking just tha same I would happily pay 19k for a new disco3

Isnt 19K about what you would get a new Freelander for?

If you can tell me which dealer is offering new discos for 19K I'll be there tomorrow with a bag of cash.

Op - I gather that the highways agency ones can make good buys at auction as the disco has a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty so they may have 150K on them at 2 years old, but still have 1 years proper warranty left
  • The OP asked why so few in private sales....and the following rant applies to many other reasonably expensive cars too.

You have to be reasonably wealthy to have bought one anyway, therefore most owners will be fairly savvy folk...
So i don't suppose they particularly want the hassle of dealing with various spivs, con men, itinerants, thieves and other undesirables who may well be in the market for this type of car, and the fun and games of either checking and keeping safe £12K cash or running the risk of dodgy cheques, stolen banker's draft's and assorted other scams.

Quite apart from the types of timewaster who test drive your car, pick it to pieces tell you all the usual guff about how they can buy the later top range model with half the mileage for £2K less (bet you know which one's i mean here), and then they don't want it themselves, they are checking it out for their brother/cousin/other fictional character.

And of course the burglars/muggers/opportunist scum who are only using the car as an excuse to check your home out for late night visits etc.

So thanks to low life chavs we have the dubious pleasure of the sharp suited car salesman instead....oh joy.

    Rant Over.....GS.

Below is the auction prices as an average over the last thirty days for 55 reg Discovery 3, hope that helps, also shows new prices for the specific models. Normally the clean condition is a pretty good guide price, so the Discovery 3 is slightly above book, but depends who is there to buy it, trade or Joe Public.

These are all from the BCA auctions, but they have a further 51 in the system for auction over the next couple of weeks, whether prices will change? everything appears to be holding it's own and a little firmer of late.

was talking to a vw dealer today who was telling me that they would have had to pay £1500 over bottom book price for 08 passats from a closed auction.

Good luck to the O/P with finding what he wants for £12K.

Piston Heads had a private sale of more or less exactly what I am looking for for 12K ( Now Sold) . ( See Link below)

But the dealer prices for equivelent seem to be between 18-22K. The private sales seem to be few and far between for similar spec cars. Of the 200 or so for sale in Autotrader only a handfull (something like 10 ) were private sales. With the introduction of the Discovery 4 in September this year 19-22K just seems far too much to pay.

Did you not spot that the example you gave from pistonheads had 114,000 miles on it?

    Hence the price.
